Which dock options should you consider?

For HP EliteBook 840 G10, lead with HP Thunderbolt Dock G4 120W when Thunderbolt expansion or its output map matters, or HP USB-C Dock G5 when a simpler two-DisplayPort-plus-HDMI desk fits the screens. HP lists both for the exact notebook and publishes current firmware that explicitly includes 840 G10. The G4 uses its included 40 Gbps/5 A electronically marked host cable and can supply up to 100 W; the notebook itself ships with 45 W or 65 W USB-C adapters. HP's host table limits the G4 route to four total displays including the notebook panel, so plan no more than three external screens with the panel active. For G5, plan three total displays including the notebook, or up to three external only with the panel disabled. G5 Essential is an exact-listed 65 W alternative; Universal Dock G2 is the separately labelled DisplayLink choice when USB-A flexibility is actually required.

HP Thunderbolt Dock G4 120W / 4J0A2 family

HP exact-lists it for EliteBook 840 G10 and publishes model-inclusive dock firmware; its native Thunderbolt route matches the notebook's two TB4/USB4 ports.

Check first: Use the included 0.8 m electronically marked 40 Gbps/5 A cable and at least the specified 120 W HP dock adapter. Apply the four-total-display host ceiling, including the internal panel.

HP USB-C Dock G5 / 5TW10 family

HP recommends and exact-lists G5 for the model; its captive host lead, two DisplayPort outputs and HDMI suit a conventional native USB-C desk.

Check first: Plan three total displays including the notebook, or three external only with the panel off. Generic G5 DSC ceilings are not exact monitor guarantees for this host.

G5 Essential or USB-C/A Universal Dock G2

HP exact-lists both: Essential provides a lower-cost native path with up to 65 W, while Universal G2 serves managed USB-A/DisplayLink deployments.

Check first: Essential's 65 W matches the notebook's highest documented adapter without extra headroom. Universal G2 requires supported DisplayLink software and carries software/protected-content tradeoffs.

Connect displays and power

G4 host connection: Power the G4 with its specified HP adapter and connect its included 40 Gbps/5 A cable directly to either notebook Thunderbolt 4 port. An ordinary cable can reduce current or Thunderbolt capability.
G4 displays: Use documented DisplayPort, HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C display outputs. The lower DisplayPort and rear USB-C DisplayPort output are mutually exclusive; start with two DisplayPort screens or DisplayPort plus HDMI.
G5 connection: Power G5 with its included adapter, connect its captive 1 m USB-C host cable directly and use rear DisplayPort or HDMI outputs. Begin with one FHD60 screen before adding the second.
Direct comparison: The notebook's HDMI 2.1 output supports a direct one-screen path up to HP's documented 4K60 ceiling; use it to isolate the monitor and cable from the dock.
Power: The notebook's exact family uses 45 W or 65 W USB-C adapters. G4 and G5 can supply up to 100 W, while G5 Essential supplies up to 65 W; the host negotiates what it needs.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing enumerates through Thunderbolt Dock G4

Verify the rear dock adapter LED is white and that the adapter is the specified HP 120 W-or-greater package.
Approve or authenticate the Thunderbolt device if the managed Windows configuration prompts, then unplug the host cable for 20 seconds and reconnect it directly.
If the dock remains absent, reboot the notebook and retest one USB device before reconnecting displays.

USB works but a display is blank

Reseat one monitor cable, select its exact input and use Windows Duplicate or Extend with a single FHD60 screen.
If G4 uses the mutually exclusive lower DisplayPort and rear USB-C DisplayPort outputs together, move one monitor to another documented output.
Compare direct notebook HDMI; if it works, update the exact 840 G10 BIOS/graphics components and dock firmware before rebuilding the display set.

USB-C Dock G5 stays black or disconnects

Inspect the USB-C plug and notebook port for damage, then insert the captive host connector straight without side pressure.
Power-cycle the dock, reconnect it directly to the other Thunderbolt 4 port and test one monitor alone.
Apply the symptom-matched HP BIOS and G5 firmware for the exact 840 G10 rather than assuming a generic driver update proves compatibility.

Charging is slow or absent

Confirm the dock's matching HP adapter and compare its host-delivery ceiling with the notebook's documented 45 W or 65 W configuration.
Reseat the specified host cable and remove high-draw accessories for the test.
Compare with the original HP USB-C adapter; restored charging isolates the dock power path without establishing a monitor result.

Still unknown: HP's compatibility, firmware and display tables are manufacturer evidence rather than a Connect Your Dock hardware test. The exact regional SKU, single- versus dual-channel graphics naming, monitor EDIDs, cable and adapter capability, simultaneous resolutions and refresh rates, DSC/HDR state, lid state, BIOS Thunderbolt security policy, enterprise software policy, sleep/wake behavior and field reliability remain unknown. Generic quad-4K or 8K dock ceilings are not promised here.
