ProBook 440 G7 docks: use the exact-listed USB-C G5

HP's exact evidence supports USB-C Dock G5; it does not establish Thunderbolt Dock G2 for this model.

Which dock options should you consider?

For HP ProBook 440 G7, choose HP USB-C Dock G5 (5TW10AA). HP's July 2020 compatibility document names the exact notebook, and the dock provides a single-cable USB-C path for data, rear-display outputs and up to 100 W to supported HP hosts. Use one or two FHD60 screens as the conservative starting arrangement. HP's generic G5 table allows higher modes only when the host supplies the required DisplayPort revision, DSC and display mode, but the reviewed exact-model sources do not publish those values for ProBook 440 G7. Do not substitute HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2: the current catalogue deliberately excludes it because HP's reviewed G2 table did not establish this exact model. A matching connector is not enough evidence.

HP USB-C Dock G5 / 5TW10AA

This is the only dock in the reviewed HP documents that names ProBook 440 G7 exactly.

Check first: Use the attached USB-C host cable and the dock's 120 W supply. Qualify from one or two FHD60 screens instead of assuming generic dual-4K or three-screen maxima.

Direct HDMI plus original charger

This is an isolation arrangement, not a dock recommendation, and separates notebook video from USB-C dock negotiation.

Check first: Use it when a dock screen is blank. A successful direct display does not prove the dock, cable or higher combined mode is compatible.

Thunderbolt G2 or other docks — not established

The reviewed official evidence does not exact-list Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 or another dock for ProBook 440 G7.

Check first: Do not infer support from an HP logo or USB-C plug. Keep the existing G2 exclusion unless new exact official evidence establishes the pairing.

Connect displays and power

Computer connection
Power USB-C Dock G5 first, then connect its captive cable directly to the notebook's video-capable USB-C port.
Display cabling
Use rear DisplayPort or HDMI outputs. Do not attach a monitor to the front USB-C data/15 W accessory socket.
Display starting point
Begin with one FHD60 screen, then add a second. Higher resolutions and three screens need exact host bandwidth/DSC evidence that remains unpublished.
Power
G5 can deliver up to 100 W to a supported HP host from its 120 W supply. This is a manufacturer ceiling, not a measured charging result for this notebook.
Isolation
Keep the original HP charger and the notebook's direct HDMI output available to separate a power problem from a dock-display problem.

First recovery steps by symptom

The dock is completely absent

  1. Unplug the dock host lead and AC power, then remove attached peripherals.
  2. Reconnect dock AC, wait for power indication and connect the captive cable directly to the notebook USB-C port.
  3. Test one keyboard or storage device before Ethernet and displays.

Peripherals work but a screen does not

  1. Use one FHD60 monitor on rear DisplayPort or HDMI and select its input.
  2. Reconnect the video cable and dock host lead, then run Windows Display Detect.
  3. Direct-test the monitor on notebook HDMI; if that works, return to one dock screen and qualify the dock path before adding another.

Charging is slow or missing

  1. Verify 5TW10AA, its matching 120 W supply and the captive host cable.
  2. Remove high-draw USB devices and reconnect the dock directly without an extension.
  3. Compare with the original HP charger; if direct power succeeds, update G5 firmware and keep the dock power path under review.

A reused G2 dock has reduced features

  1. Do not treat the G2 connector as exact compatibility evidence for this model.
  2. Move the desk to the exact-listed USB-C Dock G5 or direct HDMI/charger isolation path.
  3. Only restore the G2 if HP publishes model-specific support and the needed display/power functions.

Still unknown: The exact dock-facing DisplayPort revision, DSC capability, combined display ceiling, installed graphics configuration, monitor EDIDs, cables/adapters, mixed resolution and refresh, HDR/color depth, current BIOS and G5 firmware, Windows configuration, sleep/wake behavior, actual charge rate and physical reliability remain unknown. HP's compatibility listing is manufacturer evidence; no notebook, dock or display was tested.

HP G5: ports, power and screen checks

CheckFor this setup
Computer cableThe attached G5 USB-C cable goes to the laptop’s video-capable USB-C port.
Screen cablesUse rear HDMI or DisplayPort. The front USB-C socket is for data and 15 W accessory power, not a monitor.
Two Full HD screensListed in every G5 bandwidth column, assuming the host supports the display count. Confirm the exact laptop configuration and OS.
Two 4K60 screensRequire DP 1.3/1.4 in high-resolution mode, or DP 1.4 with DSC in the default mode. A USB-C socket alone establishes neither.
Three 4K60 screensOnly listed with DP 1.4 DSC in high-resolution mode; all three rear video outputs are used.
PowerUp to 100 W to supported HP hosts. A workstation requiring more needs separate supported power.

Before choosing a dock

  1. Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
  2. Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
  3. Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
  4. Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
