Which dock options should you consider?
For HP ProBook 450 G6, consider HP USB-C Dock G5 first when rear HDMI and DisplayPort outputs fit the desk. HP's July 2020 table explicitly names this model. HP also lists ProBook 450 G6 for Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 (2UK37AA) in its legacy Dock Solutions guide; treat that as a documented reuse option, not a reason to assume Thunderbolt performance or the 230 W combo-cable package. ProBook configurations use a 45 W or 65 W adapter, but the dock maximum still does not prove the actual negotiated charging rate.
HP USB-C Dock G5
HP's exact compatibility table names ProBook 450 G6 and the dock supplies rear HDMI plus two DisplayPort outputs with up to 100 W host power.
Check first: Start with one display. Higher combined modes depend on the host's DisplayPort capability and dock mode; the dock's three-output headline is not an exact-model guarantee.
HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 / 2UK37AA
HP's September 2019 Dock Solutions guide includes ProBook 450 G6 for this exact legacy package.
Check first: Keep the 120 W package separate from 230 W and combo-cable variants. HP's model listing does not establish a Thunderbolt-rate link or every display mode for this ProBook.
Direct USB-C display baseline
The notebook specification documents USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, making one direct display the clean isolation test before replacing a supported dock.
Check first: Use a known video-capable USB-C adapter or cable. A direct result does not certify another multiport dock.
Connect displays and power
- Computer cable
- Plug the manufacturer host lead straight into the ProBook's USB-C video port. Remove adapters, extensions and a second hub while establishing the baseline.
- USB-C Dock G5 displays
- Connect monitors at the rear HDMI or DisplayPort sockets. The front Type-C connector is documented for data and accessory power rather than video.
- Thunderbolt G2 displays
- Use the dock's documented DisplayPort, downstream USB-C/Thunderbolt or VGA route. An HDMI monitor needs an active adapter because the dock has no HDMI socket.
- Power
- Use the supply for the exact dock package and verify Windows charging. Compare with the ProBook's original 45 W or 65 W adapter when charging is absent or performance falls.
First recovery steps by symptom
Nothing on the dock works
- Confirm the exact G5 or 2UK37AA dock and its matching supply.
- Reconnect the specified host cable directly to the notebook's USB-C video port.
- Test one known-good USB accessory, then update only HP-listed notebook and dock components.
USB works but a display is blank
- Strip the setup back to a single monitor, its known cable and the matching input.
- Run 1920×1080 at 60 Hz from a documented rear output, then compare a direct notebook-to-monitor connection.
- When the direct path succeeds, restore the dock and prove that first screen before introducing another.
Charging is slow or absent
- Read Windows power status, then match the dock label to its power brick.
- Reconnect the computer lead and temporarily unplug power-hungry peripherals.
- Try the notebook's original 45 W or 65 W HP adapter; restored charging isolates the fault to the dock power path.
Still unknown: HP's exact dock lists do not establish the ProBook's installed graphics configuration, effective DisplayPort bandwidth, negotiated USB-C power, dock firmware, adapter direction, mixed monitor modes or sleep/wake behavior. The Thunderbolt G2 listing is legacy compatibility evidence, not proof of Thunderbolt bandwidth on this host.

HP G5: ports, power and screen checks
| Check | For this setup |
|---|
| Computer cable | The attached G5 USB-C cable goes to the laptop’s video-capable USB-C port. |
|---|
| Screen cables | Use rear HDMI or DisplayPort. The front USB-C socket is for data and 15 W accessory power, not a monitor. |
|---|
| Two Full HD screens | Listed in every G5 bandwidth column, assuming the host supports the display count. Confirm the exact laptop configuration and OS. |
|---|
| Two 4K60 screens | Require DP 1.3/1.4 in high-resolution mode, or DP 1.4 with DSC in the default mode. A USB-C socket alone establishes neither. |
|---|
| Three 4K60 screens | Only listed with DP 1.4 DSC in high-resolution mode; all three rear video outputs are used. |
|---|
| Power | Up to 100 W to supported HP hosts. A workstation requiring more needs separate supported power. |

Thunderbolt G2 120W: an additional documented option
| Check | For this setup |
|---|
| Model match | 2UK37AA / 120 W version. Do not substitute the 230 W or combo-cable charging claim. |
|---|
| Monitor outputs | Two DisplayPorts, rear USB-C video, rear Thunderbolt and VGA. There is no built-in HDMI socket. |
|---|
| HDMI screen | Needs a correctly directed video adapter rated for the target mode. An HDMI cable alone does not fit this dock. |
|---|
| Two-screen evidence | The manufacturer lists the model/group. A combined display mode is a separate check. |
|---|
| Charging | Up to 100 W to the host; keep the laptop’s own charger available for verification. |

- Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
- Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
- Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
- Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
