Which connection should I use?

Base M3: why we ask you to confirm
Plugable’s compatibility section allows two screens on a base M3 with the lid closed. Its FAQ still groups base M3 with one-screen M1/M2 models. Both statements appear on the reviewed page. Ask support about your exact Air or Pro model, macOS version and intended ports. Keep that answer with your equipment notes. A statement about a different M3 Pro or Max chip does not resolve a base-M3 question.
Set up an ordinary two-HDMI desk
- Confirm the laptop has the host connection required by the dock. A USB-C shape alone is not enough.
- Power the dock and use its computer-facing host port, not its downstream port.
- Connect one HDMI screen and select the screen’s HDMI input.
- Add the second HDMI screen only if your host’s native count allows it. Choose an extended desktop.
- Start with supported office modes and verify both screens, power delivery and reconnecting.
Windows fallback is a separate question
Plugable’s main specification assigns two screens to supported Thunderbolt 4/USB4 Windows hosts, with reduced single-screen behavior for older connections. If one screen already works, record the laptop port and cable. That result does not establish that a second HDMI output can receive a separate stream.
Power and a useful alternative
Plugable advertises 100 W and also states 96 W certified delivery. Check a requirement close to 100 W on your exact computer. Plugable TBT4-UD5: display limits and conflicting M3 guidance
If the task is two extra screens on a base M1/M2 laptop, review the software and workload requirements of UD-6950PDH. If you already own a suitable dock, compare the smallest missing cable or requirement before replacing it.
