Three questions to ask about a dock

Why two HDMI sockets are inconclusive
Compare two real examples. The Dell Mac guide separates Thunderbolt display paths to obtain independent desktops. Plugable’s UD-3900PDZ instead assigns one HDMI output to native video and two to DisplayLink. A diagram that only labels all three “HDMI” hides the most useful distinction. This explains why changing one cable can help a Thunderbolt arrangement while installing approved software helps a hybrid dock. Neither action is a universal fix. Identify the technology before choosing the diagnostic.
Make an output map
- Write the full host model and chip, including Pro or Max where applicable.
- Write the dock model from its label, not the retailer’s abbreviated title.
- For each monitor, record the dock socket, display technology, adapter direction and monitor input.
- Separate the maximum native display count from any software-based displays.
- Check charging last as a separate requirement: successful video does not prove that the dock delivers enough power.
Choose for the workload
A managed computer may rule out an otherwise useful software dock. A desk used for protected streaming or latency-sensitive graphics needs a different assessment from email and spreadsheets. Start with the managed-Mac requirements if installation permissions are uncertain.
If you already own a functioning direct connection, keep it as a baseline. A dock is worthwhile when it solves an identified requirement such as shared peripherals or a supported one-cable setup. A larger advertised port count alone does not establish that benefit.
