Give every cable a job

Fill these out before searching a store. “USB-C cable” is not a sufficiently specific order. A product may be suitable for one row and unsuitable for another.
A common WD22TB4 Mac arrangement
For the diagram below, display A accepts DisplayPort and display B accepts a compatible video input reached from downstream Thunderbolt. Select the second cable or adapter for the actual input on your monitor. The exact port routing comes from the linked setup guide; it is not interchangeable with a plain WD19S diagram.
If display B only has HDMI, check a USB-C video-output to HDMI-input adapter’s specifications and direction. Do not assume an HDMI-source to USB-C-display product works in reverse. Verify the vendor’s stated endpoints and target mode before purchase.

What the listing needs to tell you
- The source device/port and destination input it supports.
- The video resolution and refresh rate together, not just “4K.”
- Whether the cable is directional or needs an active adapter.
- The supported protocol and any host requirements.
- The power rating, when that cable must also charge the laptop.
- Whether the required cable is already included with your monitor or dock.

Avoid buying a cable to fix the wrong problem
If the laptop has reached its native display limit, changing an ordinary cable will not add another native screen. If the dock sends two sockets through a Mac-incompatible extended-display arrangement, confirm the topology first. The mirroring guide helps separate those cases.
Likewise, if the combined mode exceeds the documented dock path, a better cable is useful only when the existing cable is actually the limiting component. Compare the intended mode with the applicable display table.
Test the purchase deliberately
- Keep a working cable as your control. Change only the suspected cable or adapter.
- Check both monitors at the required modes and use different windows to confirm independent desktops.
- Test reconnecting and a normal sleep/wake cycle.
- Keep the packaging and record the exact cable model once you have a reliable result. A generic photo is difficult to use for future troubleshooting.
Separate connector conversion from a display upgrade

Do not buy a chain cable just because the first monitor has spare inputs. Likewise, an HDMI-to-DisplayPort product title may describe the opposite direction from the path you need. Draw the source port, conversion direction and display input in your equipment record, then verify the exact adapter model rather than relying on connector photographs.
