Draw the direction of the chain
A chain is laptop to display A, then display A’s supported output to display B’s input. A monitor with several inputs does not necessarily have an output. Read the port labels on the actual display. Two HDMI inputs are typically choices for two source devices, not evidence that one screen can feed another. Do not buy a cable until the first display’s downstream function is established.
Mac and Windows need different checks

A base M2 Air’s native display limit remains relevant even when every connector in a proposed chain is Thunderbolt. The dock or monitor cannot supply an extra native host display stream. Apple: MacBook Air M2 (2022) specifications
Test the downstream link separately
- Connect display A directly to the laptop and select the correct input.
- Check its manual for the required output and any model-specific chaining setting.
- Connect display B to that output, retaining power for both screens.
- Inspect the OS display arrangement and verify independent windows.
- If B fails, test B directly with the laptop before changing chain settings or buying another cable.
Does a monitor chain replace a dock?
It may reduce video cables, but it does not automatically satisfy USB peripherals, Ethernet or laptop charging. Record those requirements independently. A monitor’s video path and USB upstream connection can be separate functions.
If the chain is unsupported, two direct host connections may be simpler than replacing working screens. If a single-cable desk is essential, compare a supported dock arrangement against the full cost of new monitors, adapters and power requirements.
