Which dock options should you consider?
Start with a native Thunderbolt dock whose Mac output arrangement is documented. Dell WD22TB4 or WD19TB/TBS, CalDigit TS4 and Plugable TBT4-UDZ each provide a documented two-path arrangement to investigate. Apple allows two external displays alongside the built-in display on MacBook Air M4, but the dock, adapters and monitors must also support the requested modes. Use DisplayLink only when you intentionally need a software-driven route; M4 Air does not need it merely to reach two native external displays.
Dell WD22TB4 or WD19TB / WD19TBS
Dell documents Apple-host arrangements that separate one ordinary display output from a downstream Thunderbolt video path; WD22TB4 can also use its two downstream Thunderbolt paths.
Check first: Do not put both displays on the shared DisplayPort/HDMI branch and assume they are independent on macOS. Confirm the exact dock, firmware, cables and monitor modes.
CalDigit TS4
CalDigit documents native Mac display routes using DisplayPort plus downstream Thunderbolt, or two downstream Thunderbolt connections, with up to 98 W host charging.
Check first: TS4 has no built-in HDMI output. An HDMI screen needs a suitable USB-C video adapter from downstream Thunderbolt or an active DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter on the DisplayPort path.
Plugable TBT4-UDZ
Plugable documents two external Mac displays by using one HDMI or DisplayPort output from each numbered display group, with up to two 4K 60 Hz screens under its stated conditions.
Check first: Use the supplied Thunderbolt host cable and one output per group. The rear USB-C accessory port is not a monitor output, and the dock's two-screen Mac limit still applies.
Connect displays and power
- Computer cable
- Connect the dock's specified Thunderbolt cable directly to either MacBook Air Thunderbolt 4 port. Do not use an ordinary USB-C charge or accessory cable as the host link.
- Display cables
- Use two independent documented paths: for example, Dell DisplayPort plus downstream Thunderbolt, TS4 DisplayPort plus downstream Thunderbolt, or one TBT4-UDZ output from each numbered group.
- Power
- Power the dock with its exact supply and verify that macOS reports charging. If charging is absent or unstable, keep the Apple charger or MagSafe connection available while isolating video from dock power.
- Host display ceiling
- Apple documents two external displays alongside the built-in display. Closing the lid does not add a third external display. Apple lists up to two 6K 60 Hz or 4K 144 Hz displays, but that direct host ceiling is not a promise that a chosen dock and adapters carry those exact modes.
First recovery steps by symptom
Nothing on the dock works
- Confirm the dock has its specified AC supply and its host-side indicator, if documented.
- Reconnect the intended Thunderbolt host cable directly to the Mac with no extension or intermediary hub.
- Try the other Mac Thunderbolt port and one known-good USB accessory before changing monitor settings.
One display works, but the second is blank or mirrors
- Test each monitor alone with its current cable and selected input.
- Move the second display to the dock's documented independent path rather than another socket on the same output group.
- Open Displays settings, choose an extended arrangement, then add the second display at a moderate mode before increasing resolution or refresh rate.
The dock works, but charging or wake is unreliable
- Separate the tests: confirm video and USB first, then inspect the charging state in macOS.
- Use the dock's original supply and specified host cable, and compare with the Apple charger or MagSafe connection.
- Install only model-specific dock firmware using the manufacturer's supported process, then retest one display and a sleep/wake cycle.
Still unknown: Neither Apple nor the dock makers establish every mixed-resolution, HDR, high-refresh, adapter, cable, sleep/wake and firmware combination across these three dock families. The exact MacBook Air size, macOS build, dock revision, display inputs and chosen modes remain material.

- Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
- Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
- Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
- Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
