A concrete desk: ports and cables

Two independent external 4K60 screens, with the built-in Mac screen available. This example uses DisplayPort for screen 1 and HDMI for screen 2. It is documentation-based; it is not a physical test of your monitors or adapters.

Check the box contents and the cables you already own before ordering. Monitor and dock model names alone do not identify a cable’s mode rating or direction.

If this exact arrangement fails

The external screens mirror each other
Confirm screen 2 uses downstream Thunderbolt, then choose an extended display in macOS.
Both screens work alone but not together
Record both output paths and modes. Check the Dell firmware requirements before replacing the dock.
The Mac wakes but one monitor stays black
Reselect that monitor’s input and reconnect its video cable once. Compare with a direct Mac-to-monitor connection to isolate the dock path.
  1. Connect only screen 1 and record its working input and mode.
  2. Add the next screen on the labelled route. Confirm separate windows on each screen.
  3. Check every selected mode, a sleep/wake cycle and a reconnect. Record any failure before changing another component.

What changes from the M3 Air

Apple allows two external displays with the M4 Air’s built-in screen active. Closing the lid does not add another external display. This is why the M3 closed-lid instructions should not be copied unchanged to an M4 guide. Apple: MacBook Air display support

If you move between an M3 and M4 machine at the same desk, label each laptop clearly in your setup notes. The same dock and monitors can behave differently because the host rules changed.

Plan the outputs before connecting

Use the WD22TB4 topology illustrated below: display A on DisplayPort, display B on a downstream Thunderbolt connection with the appropriate video cable or adapter. Dell also documents a dual downstream-Thunderbolt arrangement for this dock. Dell: Thunderbolt docks with Apple hosts

Choose your target display mode from the intersection of laptop, dock, adapter and monitor support. Start with a moderate mode on both screens before increasing resolution or refresh rate. This guide does not claim that the Mac’s maximum direct-connection specification is available through this dock.

Set up the three-screen workspace

  1. Power the dock, connect it to the Mac, and attach one external monitor. Select the actual wired input on that monitor.
  2. Leave the laptop open. Confirm the first external desktop in Displays settings.
  3. Connect the second monitor on the separate path shown below. Arrange all three screens in Displays settings.
  4. Move a window to each display to confirm independent desktops. Seeing the same wallpaper is not a sufficient test of mirroring.
  5. Test a normal work session, then sleep and wake the laptop. Record the resolution and refresh rate for each screen when the desk behaves correctly.

If it mirrors or loses a screen

If the two external screens always show the same window, follow the mirroring diagnostic. If one stays dark, disconnect the second screen and test each separately. That gives a more useful result than changing several cables and software settings at once.

A desk that only fails after sleep needs a different report from one that never produced two screens. Record whether reconnecting a specific cable restores it, along with OS and dock firmware versions. Use Apple’s external-display troubleshooting to narrow the failing stage. Keep the buying decision small

If both monitors already work individually, first check whether you are missing a correctly specified cable for the second output. Replacing the entire dock may be unnecessary. If you need high refresh rates or specialist color workflows, verify that exact mode with the hardware suppliers instead of treating “two displays” as a complete specification.

A display pass is useful without being a complete dock certification. If the camera fails but the screens remain stable, use the camera guide and preserve the working display cables. If the image is visible but uncomfortable, distinguish signal resolution from interface scaling with the clarity guide.
