Dell docks with Apple silicon: start here

First, identify the Mac

Open About This Mac and record the full chip name. Base M2, M3 and M4 are different cases; Pro and Max are also distinct chips. A dock’s advertised monitor count does not override the laptop’s own display limit.

Second, identify the signal paths

Dell’s Apple-host guide covers WD19TB, WD19TBS and WD22TB4. For two independent screens, its illustrated arrangements separate a downstream Thunderbolt path from the dock’s other display outputs, or use the two downstream Thunderbolt connections on WD22TB4. The plain WD19 and WD19S are a different branch. Start with the dock identification guide if your model name is uncertain. Installing a display utility is not evidence that a plain USB-C dock has become a Thunderbolt dock.

Do not make the power button a buying criterion yet

There is a documentation conflict. Dell’s general cross-brand article lists no Mac power-button emulation and up to 90 W charging. Its newer Apple-specific guide lists power-button support and up to 96 W within its stated firmware scope. This pilot has not physically resolved that difference. Treat those convenience features as configuration-dependent. Check your exact firmware and laptop, and start the computer with its own power button. If remote power-on is essential to your desk, obtain confirmation for that combination before buying.

A sensible first connection test

1. Start with one display and a direct, known-good video cable. Record whether the laptop sees it.
2. Add the dock while keeping the same display and mode. This separates a dock-path problem from a monitor problem.
3. Add the second screen only after checking the Mac limit and exact port arrangement.
4. Test wake, a video call and normal charging after the displays work. A visible desktop is only one part of a usable desk.

Compare another brand without losing the host rules

Moving to another dock brand does not remove the need to identify the Mac chip. The TS4 guide uses native display paths; the UD-3900PDZ guide separates native and software-driven outputs. Those architectures answer different requirements.

For MacBook Pro, start with the exact M3 Pro/Max or M4 Pro/Max model guide. A dock comparison that leaves out Pro, Max, lid state and required display modes is missing information needed for the decision. Keep a separate setup record for each computer sharing the desk.
