Read the display row as well as the port row

Apple specifies Thunderbolt 5 ports on these models, but gives different external-display arrangements for Pro and Max. Two external displays can operate with the built-in screen on M4 Pro; M4 Max’s four-display arrangement also uses the host HDMI output. Apple: 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 Pro / Max specifications

A faster connection standard and a larger native display count are different capabilities. If you need three independent external desktops, do not assume a Thunderbolt 5 dock turns the two-display Pro configuration into the Max configuration.

The monitor’s HDMI and DisplayPort inputs may support different modes. Record the input you will actually use rather than its best advertised mode on another connector.

Keep the dock decision separate from the computer decision

A previously owned Thunderbolt dock may still meet a two-screen requirement. Newer host ports alone are not a reason to replace it. Conversely, a dock that lacks the required independent Mac output paths remains a limitation even on an M4 Max.

  1. Record the exact laptop, screens and intended input ports.
  2. Confirm each screen directly before inserting adapters and the dock.
  3. Test one dock output, then the second supported path.
  4. Record independent desktops and selected modes; test wake and the actual daily workload.

Before paying for an upgrade

Name the missing capability and obtain documentation for the complete replacement arrangement. If the present problem is a directional adapter or a shared output branch, changing the laptop may leave that problem intact.

Use the Dell dock comparison or the TS4 Mac guide for model-specific routes. Neither is a hands-on recommendation or a promise of the host’s maximum mode through every adapter.
