Applies to: WD22TB4 versus WD19S; prices and hands-on performance are not measured. Complete used bundles and exact host requirements must be checked.
The difference that affects a real setup
| Question | WD19S | WD22TB4 |
|---|---|---|
| Main connection family | Native USB-C docking | Thunderbolt 4 docking |
| Where to verify display modes | WD19S resolution table | Exact host plus WD22TB4 documentation |
| Two independent Mac displays | Do not apply a Thunderbolt wiring guide | Dell documents distinct output paths for eligible Macs |
| Used purchase check | Body, cable and required adapter | Body, Thunderbolt module and required adapter |

Three decisions with different answers
- A Windows desk already producing the required displays, power and peripherals: retain the WD19S unless a specific unmet requirement appears.
- An eligible Mac that mirrors on the existing USB-C output arrangement: a documented Thunderbolt topology may solve the missing independent path.
- A base M2 Air that needs two native external displays: a Thunderbolt dock alone does not change the host’s display limit.
A recommendation becomes useful when it names the limitation it removes. “Newer” does not explain whether your second monitor, camera or charging problem will change.
Compare complete cost
List the dock, required power adapter, host cable or module, monitor adapters and any separate laptop charger. A low used-dock price can be misleading if essential parts are absent. Dell documents module upgrades; verify a supported kit before assuming an old base and new cable are equivalent.
Also count operational cost: managed-software approval, a supported firmware update process and the time spent reconnecting a flaky desk. Those are real tradeoffs even when no additional product purchase is needed.
A buying brief you can send to a supplier
Specify the exact laptop and chip, OS, two monitor models, required modes and whether the laptop screen remains active. Ask for the supported output pair, included adapters, charging expectation and return conditions for that complete arrangement.
