Use the full chip name
“MacBook Pro M3” is ambiguous: it can name the notebook family while omitting whether the chip is M3, M3 Pro or M3 Max. Open About This Mac and record the complete chip before choosing a display plan.

A laptop maximum is not a dock maximum
The four-display M3 Max specification does not mean four independent screens will appear behind an arbitrary dock cable. Draw every route from the Mac to the monitors and verify the dock’s output architecture separately.
A desk with two ordinary productivity displays may fit either chip’s native count. A third required external display changes the decision. Do not count the internal screen as one of the external displays or add mutually exclusive maximum-mode examples together.
Choose a conservative first arrangement
- Write the required external screen count and each target mode before buying a dock.
- Test the first monitor directly through an appropriate host output.
- Add another documented host route and verify independent desktops.
- Introduce the dock only after confirming its supported display count and output pair.
- Increase refresh rates one display at a time within the combined limits, retaining a record of the working settings.
If you already own the wrong dock
A direct host connection for one screen may preserve the rest of an otherwise useful dock setup. Evaluate cable handling and desk layout before replacing the dock or laptop. If an extra software-driven screen is proposed, assess application and workplace restrictions separately.
For a current buying comparison, distinguish the computer’s exact model year from its sale date. A refurbished listing described simply as “M3 MacBook Pro” needs the complete chip and model information before it is useful evidence of display compatibility.
