Keep three power numbers separate

For example, Dell’s cross-brand table lists up to 90 W to non-Dell Windows laptops, even where a Dell-specific configuration advertises 130 W. That is a compatibility ceiling, not a measurement of your desk. Dell: cross-brand dock compatibility

Compare the dock with the original charger

  1. Save your work and stop storage transfers. Note battery percentage and any charging warning while connected to the dock.
  2. Use the laptop’s supported original charger directly, following its normal instructions. Compare behavior under a similar workload and battery level.
  3. Reconnect the powered dock using its proper host cable and adapter. Avoid an intermediate extension or hub during this comparison.
  4. Remove optional power-hungry USB accessories one at a time. Record whether the warning or battery trend changes.
  5. Check the laptop’s charging settings and battery status. A deliberate charge limit or a nearly full battery should not be diagnosed as insufficient dock power without further evidence.

What to do with the result

If the original charger works but the dock does not, focus on the dock’s negotiated supply, adapter and host cable. If neither works, the laptop, charger or power source needs attention. A battery that slowly drains during a heavy task needs a different assessment from one that simply takes longer to refill. Keep the workload consistent when comparing. A short glance at the charging icon does not establish sustained adequacy.

A Mac-specific complication

Dell’s general and Apple-specific documents disagree on some charging and convenience-feature entries. We retain that conflict in the Apple compatibility guide. Check the exact dock firmware scope instead of selecting whichever published number is larger.

Before replacing the whole dock

If the display setup works, using the laptop’s supported charger alongside the dock may be a practical arrangement where the manufacturer permits it. Follow the laptop’s rules for multiple power connections; do not assume two supplies add together. Apple: charging a Mac laptop

If you need a single cable, make the laptop-specific delivery requirement part of your purchasing checklist. Ask for the power offered to your model, rather than the power-brick size in the product title.

Two model-specific checks that save time

The UD-6950H has no laptop-charging function, so a separate charger is expected. The Anker 778 has a documented shared power budget, so connected front-port loads can change host delivery. These are different explanations for the same battery complaint.

Record whether the warning appears immediately, only under a heavy task, or only after another device is attached. Keep battery percentage, workload and the original-charger comparison in the same log. Do not infer exact delivered watts from the battery icon or the power brick’s headline rating.
