The screens show the same desktop
Separate an operating-system setting from a dock output limit or a laptop display limit.
This is a proposed diagnostic sequence. Its result identifies a next check; it does not prove a hardware fault.
Checks you can read directly
Use these written outcomes if you prefer to browse, or if JavaScript is unavailable.
Choose extended desktops
In Windows display settings choose Extend these displays; on macOS turn off mirroring for the relevant screens. Arrange their positions and move a different window onto each. If changing this does not stick, record the exact arrangement and continue with the model guide.
Check display settings first
On a Mac open System Settings → Displays. On Windows open Settings → System → Display and identify the screens. Return to this flow once you know whether the OS sees one or two external displays.
The Air M2 has one native external-display output
A native-video dock cannot add a second native external desktop. Keep one external screen or assess an approved DisplayLink arrangement with its software and workload limitations.
Meet the Air M3 closed-lid requirements
For two native external displays, use macOS Sonoma 14.3 or later, external power and an external keyboard/mouse, then close the Air M3 lid. The dock still needs separate supported output paths.
Put the second screen on a separate Thunderbolt path
For the documented Dell Mac arrangement, move the second screen from the shared DP/HDMI/MFDP group to a downstream Thunderbolt video connection. On TS4 use its documented DP-plus-Thunderbolt or two-Thunderbolt arrangement. Check cable direction and mode ratings.
The output arrangement may be the limit
Anker 575 and Lenovo 40AS Mac guidance describes cloned external content. Changing the mirroring preference does not supply a missing independent video path. Keep one external desktop, use another documented host connection, or assess a different supported arrangement.
Check the software-driven display output
Confirm the screens use separate display groups and that DisplayLink Manager has the required permission. A hybrid dock may mix one native HDMI port with separate software-driven ports.
Check detection and the combined mode budget
Choose Extend in display settings, then test each screen alone. Confirm the laptop’s supported outputs and dock bandwidth for the selected modes. A lower-mode comparison can help isolate bandwidth; it does not prove every higher mode is supported.
Identify the exact model before changing hardware
Record laptop/chip, dock, OS, output ports and both monitor modes. Use the setup checker or model guide to locate the missing requirement.
Use iPad-specific display guidance
iPadOS has different external-window and display-count rules from macOS. The linked guide covers iPad Pro 11-inch M4; confirm the model before applying it to another iPad.
Check the full Galaxy Tab model and DeX support
The Tab S9 and S9 FE have different wired-output support. Use the exact Samsung model and installed software instructions before changing cables or buying a dock.
Identify the device and operating system
Read the full model and OS from the device information or manufacturer label. Windows, iPadOS and Android instructions are not interchangeable.
