Applies to: Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 family and the S9 FE exception in Samsung’s current DeX guidance. Exact third-party dock and display-mode support remains a separate check.
Read the full tablet name
A shop title shortened to “Tab S9” can hide the FE distinction. Samsung’s compatibility list identifies the standard family and the FE HDMI-output exception. Samsung: DeX devices and wired connections
Record the full tablet model and installed software version. Keep that information separate from the dock and monitor brands; a Samsung tablet does not require a Samsung monitor merely because the logos differ.
For a supported wired DeX device
Samsung describes a USB-C-to-HDMI connection to a monitor or TV, followed by starting or selecting DeX. The initial picture may be mirroring, so check which mode actually opened. Samsung: DeX devices and wired connections
- Connect the supported video adapter/cable and select the monitor’s HDMI input.
- Unlock the tablet and follow the applicable DeX prompt or setting.
- Test a normal app and the intended keyboard or pointer arrangement.
- Check the current tablet software’s DeX mode controls if the external workspace does not appear.
If there is no usable external workspace
Samsung’s troubleshooting guide covers cable checks, monitor settings and a Classic-mode check for applicable tablet DeX versions. Menu names and available modes can change with software, so use the instructions matching the installed version. Samsung: external DeX display troubleshooting
Test a known working display input and cable before attributing a dark screen to the tablet. If the tablet is an FE model excluded from HDMI output, repeated passive HDMI-adapter purchases do not remove that documented limitation.
What a laptop dock does not prove
A Dell, HP or ASUS dock’s Windows compatibility is not a DeX compatibility statement. Verify video output, charging and USB peripherals for the exact Galaxy tablet. A USB graphics dock may have different software requirements; this guide does not establish an Android software workaround.
Our checker keeps those pairings unconfirmed and exposes the S9 FE HDMI exception. Use the device identification guide if you cannot tell which tablet version you own.
