Choose the device running your apps
| Device type | Examples | Which instructions apply? |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop | Apple MacBook; ASUS, Dell, HP or Lenovo laptop | Use the exact laptop model/chip and OS. |
| Tablet / detachable | Apple iPad; Samsung Galaxy Tab; Microsoft Surface Pro | Separate iPadOS, Android/DeX and Windows. A detachable keyboard does not change the OS. |
| Desktop | Mac mini, iMac, branded PC or custom PC | Use the computer and its actual video-output specification; laptop charging guidance may not apply. |
The screen on your desk may have another brand. Record it as the monitor; it does not determine the computer’s brand.
Find the model without sharing a serial number
On a Mac, About This Mac provides the model information; the chip variant matters. On Windows, Settings → System → About provides device details, including the model where available. Apple: identify the Mac model · Microsoft: find device model information
For a tablet, use its device-information settings or model label and compare the complete name with the manufacturer’s documentation. Keep suffixes such as FE and processor variants such as Surface SQ3. You do not need to publish a serial number, service tag or account email.
Identify the separate connection box
A dock is the box that gives the computer or tablet additional ports. Read the dock’s own underside or rear label. The power adapter may have a different model number. If you use only a cable or adapter, record that direct route instead of inventing a dock model.
A USB-C connector does not by itself establish video output or a power capability. On a desktop, identify the exact source port in the computer’s documentation before choosing an adapter. Microsoft: USB-C troubleshooting in Windows

- Check a documented laptop or device setup
If your model is missing, choose “not listed”. A useful result can identify the missing evidence without pretending the device has the capabilities of a similar model. The device directory now includes named Mac desktops, iPads and Surface variants with scoped direct-connection guidance. Unlisted combinations remain unconfirmed.
