Applies to: Surface models explicitly listed in Microsoft’s Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock overview, reviewed 8 September 2026. Display limits remain conditional on the device, screens and connection.
Choose the right Surface variant
Surface Pro 9 Intel and Surface Pro 9 SQ3/5G use different connection capabilities. Surface Laptop 7 Intel and Snapdragon are also separate entries. The Surface directory lets you start from the exact name rather than from a dock socket. Microsoft: Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock compatibility and exceptions
Read the display route
| Connection | Starting arrangement |
|---|---|
| USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 | Up to two external 4K60 screens when the host and displays support that mode. |
| USB-C fallback | Start with one external screen, up to 4K60 when supported. |
| MST daisy chain | Requires compatible displays and a separately checked arrangement; combined modes may be lower. |
One-screen fallback guidance is not an absolute ban on every multi-screen chain. Equally, the dock’s two-screen headline does not promise two 4K60 screens on every older Surface.
Check exceptions before purchase
Microsoft documents an audio-device enumeration issue for Surface Laptop 3 AMD, System SKU 1873. Surface Studio 2+ can use the dock but does not charge from it. These conditions appear on the affected model pages. A desk requiring reliable dock audio or one-cable power should account for them before purchase.
Keep Surface Connect separate
Surface Dock 2 uses the proprietary Surface Connect host connection. Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock uses USB-C. A shared Microsoft brand does not substitute for the correct port or prove full compatibility. Use the dock comparison guide if you already own one and are replacing the computer.
