Applies to: Surface Pro 9 Intel/Wi-Fi and Pro 9 SQ3/5G only. This comparison covers native external displays and distinguishes Surface Connect from USB-C fallback.

If you already have Dock 2

Use its magnetic Surface Connect cable and both rear USB-C video outputs for two screens. Each HDMI monitor needs its own appropriately rated USB-C video-to-HDMI adapter or cable. The Dock 2 connection guide shows the exact route. You do not need to install DisplayLink for these native paths.

If you already have the Thunderbolt 4 Dock

Keep the distinction between the dock’s name and the host’s connection. Microsoft’s USB-C fallback guidance differs from its USB4/TB4 guidance. Test and document the requested setup before replacing a working dock. A separately verified MST arrangement may have different limits; that possibility does not establish the Intel headline mode for SQ3.

ARM matters beyond the picture

  1. Confirm whether the Pro 9 is Intel/Wi-Fi or SQ3/5G.
  2. Check any peripheral that requires a driver against that operating-system architecture.
  3. Verify Ethernet, audio, webcam and charging after the native display route works.
  4. Ask IT before installing software or changing firmware on a managed Surface.
  5. Keep a record of exact dock, cable and monitor models so a later firmware change can be diagnosed.
