Each adapter or cable must support the requested mode and the correct source-to-display direction. For a USB-C monitor, use a video-capable USB-C cable; a charge-only cable is insufficient. Match the device and dock limits

The screen limit on each updated model page combines Microsoft’s device table with its Dock 2 table. A higher direct-display limit on the Surface does not remove the dock’s limit. The common larger-model starting point is two 3840 × 2160 screens at 60 Hz; Go and Laptop Go need their specific table. Microsoft: maximum display modes through Surface docks

Supply power to the correct connection

Microsoft specifies a 199 W Dock 2 supply and up to 120 W passthrough to the Surface. Those are different measurements. Use the correct supply and verify the exact device configuration’s power demand, especially under sustained load. The dock’s native display paths do not need DisplayLink; operating-system updates, dock firmware and adapter support still matter.

If one or both screens stay dark

  1. Check that the dock is powered and its Surface Connect cable is seated on the Surface.
  2. Move video adapters from the front sockets to the two rear video sockets.
  3. Connect one monitor only, select its exact input and verify a picture.
  4. Add the other screen to the other rear video port. Choose extended desktops and set each supported mode.
  5. If only one adapter fails, swap the two rear ports while keeping the same screen and cable. If the failure follows the adapter, verify its direction and mode support before replacing the dock.

Similar names that are not the same hardware

Surface Pro 12-inch is not Surface Pro 12th Edition. Surface Laptop 13-inch is not the 13.8-inch Laptop 7. Surface Studio 2+ is not Laptop Studio 2. The first three are not in the reviewed Dock 2 support list. Use their exact model pages to choose another connection.
