The institutional reference names this HP model and the WD19S 180 W arrangement. Start with two DisplayPort screens at Full HD 60 Hz. That deployment evidence does not certify every firmware, monitor mode, charging load or newer EliteBook generation.

If this exact arrangement fails

Neither monitor appears
Check dock power, host cable seating and both selected monitor inputs; test one monitor first.
Only one screen appears in Windows
Swap the working screen and cable onto the other dock output. This separates an output issue from a screen/cable issue.
A feature works on a Dell laptop but not this HP
Check that feature separately. Start the HP using its own button and retain its charger if dock power is insufficient.
  1. Connect only screen 1 and record its working input and mode.
  2. Add the next screen on the labelled route. Confirm separate windows on each screen.
  3. Check every selected mode, a sleep/wake cycle and a reconnect. Record any failure before changing another component.

Why this exact older model is covered

The University of Michigan names the EliteBook 840 G6 in its WD19S supported list and notes inconsistent dock power-button behavior for G6 machines. That gives this guide a specific reference point. A newer laptop may have suitable ports too, but that is a separate assessment. An “840” label without the generation is not enough to transfer these conclusions.

Check the equipment you received

  1. Confirm “840 G6” in the laptop’s system information or support record. Keep any serial number private.
  2. Confirm that the dock is WD19S and record the power adapter’s rating. The cited deployment uses the 180 W package.
  3. Write down the monitor models and the actual input connectors. Do not use an HDMI splitter as a substitute for two independent dock outputs.
  4. Inspect the supplied host cable and connect directly to the laptop, avoiding an unverified extension or intermediate hub.

Validate a working desk

Start with one monitor and no unnecessary USB devices. Once it works, connect the second screen and select an extended desktop in Windows. Test each display alone if adding the second causes a failure. A monitor that works by itself helps isolate the combined-output question.

When the dock seems partly compatible

A power-button problem alone does not show that display output or charging is broken. Conversely, a visible picture does not prove that battery power is sufficient for your workload. Record each result separately so you do not replace functional equipment to solve a single unsupported convenience feature.

For high-resolution screens, use the dock’s resolution and bandwidth guide. For a battery warning, compare the original HP charger with the powered dock using the charging diagnostic. A managed laptop should follow your organization’s driver and firmware update process.

If your laptop is actually a different EliteBook

A guide for 840 G6 is not evidence for 840 G10, G11 or an 850 variant. Identify the exact model privately in the system or manufacturer record and use its own port specification. Keep the G6 institutional reference within its stated scope.

If your current G6 desk passes the required screens, power and peripherals, replacing it solely to match a newer example in a guide has no established benefit.
