What cross-brand support means here
HP lists non-HP host use subject to USB-C requirements including DisplayPort Alt Mode and Power Delivery. That supports assessing an eligible laptop; it does not establish every monitor mode or vendor-specific management feature. HP: USB-C Dock G5 host requirements
Start from the laptop’s own support page. Record its machine type, the selected USB-C port and its advertised functions. A laptop may have several similar-looking ports with different roles.
Evaluate four independent capabilities

Do not approve a workplace deployment from a successful monitor test alone. Conversely, a nonworking dock power button does not prove that video or Ethernet is unusable.
A practical first connection
- Use the G5’s required power adapter and intended laptop cable.
- Connect one monitor and choose its actual wired input.
- Confirm an independent desktop before adding another screen.
- Use the dock manual’s permitted output combination and a supported mode for each screen.
- Check charging with your normal workload, then add the required USB peripherals.
- Test reconnecting and waking the laptop using its own controls.
If a borrowed dock only partly works
Write down which stage fails. “USB keyboard works, display missing” is more actionable than “not compatible”. Follow the USB-C video diagnostic for missing pictures, or the Ethernet guide for a network-only failure.
For a purchase, ask HP or the laptop supplier to confirm the exact combination and required display modes. A broad cross-brand statement is not enough to justify a promised single-cable setup on an unidentified host.
