EliteBook 840 G9 docks: exact G2 and G5 choices, cautious display limits

Which dock options should you consider?

For HP EliteBook 840 G9, consider HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 when Thunderbolt expansion is the reason to dock, or HP USB-C Dock G5 when its rear HDMI and DisplayPort layout fits the desk. HP exact-lists both families, plus USB-C/A Universal Dock G2 as a software-assisted alternative. The current HP QuickSpecs documents two Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40 Gbps USB-C ports with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4. Use HP's exact-model dual-display-through-a-dock statement as the safe plan: the document does not prove every G5 high-resolution mode for this notebook. Do not treat later Thunderbolt G4 as an exact-listed pair without newer model-specific evidence.

Connect displays and power

Computer cable

Connect the exact dock's supplied host cable directly to either Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 port, without an extension or intermediate hub.

Displays

For G5, use rear DisplayPort or HDMI. For Thunderbolt G2, follow the exact package's output map; prove one FHD60 screen before adding the second.

Direct fallback

The notebook's HDMI 2.0b output is a useful one-screen comparison that separates the monitor and cable from the dock's MST or Thunderbolt path.

Power

HP lists 45 W and 65 W USB-C adapters and maximum operating power below 65 W. Use the dock's matching supply and verify Windows charging rather than inferring it from the supply label.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing on the dock works

1. Confirm the complete dock model, package and matching HP power supply.
2. Reconnect the host cable directly to one Thunderbolt 4 port, then try the other port.
3. Prove one known-good USB device before reconnecting displays or changing graphics settings.

USB works but one or both displays are blank

1. Test one monitor alone at 1920×1080 60 Hz and select its exact input.
2. Use a documented dock output and known-good cable, then compare the notebook's direct HDMI output.
3. If direct video works, update only the exact HP notebook and dock components before restoring the second screen.

Charging is slow or absent

1. Check Windows charging state and verify the supply belongs to the exact dock package.
2. Reseat the host cable and remove high-draw accessories for the test.
3. Compare with the original 45 W or 65 W HP USB-C adapter; restored charging isolates the dock power path.

Still unknown: HP's current QuickSpecs documents DisplayPort 1.4 but does not establish DSC status or every exact dual-monitor mode through each listed dock. Current BIOS, dock firmware, regional configuration, mixed resolutions, refresh, HDR, cable and adapter capability, enterprise policy and sleep/wake behavior also remain unknown. No physical 840 G9 desk was tested.
