Which dock options should you consider?
For HP ProBook 650 G4, lead with HP USB-C Dock G5 / 5TW10AA: HP's July 2020 list names both the standard and Hex Core variants, and its fixed USB-C host cable can provide up to 100 W to supported HP hosts. Start with one Full HD 60 Hz display on a rear DisplayPort or HDMI socket because HP does not establish this laptop's exact DisplayPort revision or DSC support; the dock's higher multi-4K rows are conditional, not promises for this computer. USB-C Dock G4 / 3FF69AA is an exact-listed standard-model alternative, but its documented host profile tops out at 60 W, so a 65 W or 90 W laptop configuration may charge slowly or need its original adapter. Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 / 2UK37AA is also manufacturer-listed, but this laptop is documented as USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode rather than Thunderbolt: use the fallback path and do not use the dock's rear Thunderbolt socket for video. An existing UltraSlim Dock can use the proprietary side connector. Check the service label first, because HP treats the Hex Core family separately in support records.
HP USB-C Dock G5 / 5TW10AA
HP's exact compatibility list names both ProBook 650 G4 and ProBook 650 G4 Hex Core, and the dock can provide up to 100 W to supported HP hosts.
Check first: Connect the fixed 1 m host cable to the laptop's USB-C port and use rear DisplayPort or HDMI for a monitor. Begin at FHD60; higher combined modes require an unconfirmed host DP/DSC path.
HP USB-C Dock G4 / 3FF69AA
HP's September 2018 sheet explicitly lists the standard-named ProBook 650 G4 and publishes conditional one-, two- and three-screen ceilings.
Check first: Its 90 W AC adapter does not mean 90 W to the laptop: the highest documented USB-C PD profile is 60 W. A 65 W or 90 W laptop configuration may need its original charger.
Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 or UltraSlim Dock
HP recommends 2UK37AA for this notebook and lists ProBook 640/650 G2–G5 for the mechanical UltraSlim family.
Check first: The G2 runs as USB-C Alt Mode on this non-Thunderbolt host; its rear Thunderbolt socket has no video in fallback. UltraSlim uses the proprietary side connector, not USB-C.
Connect displays and power
- G5 computer cable
- Power the G5 with its 120 W supply, then connect its fixed USB-C host cable directly to the laptop USB-C port. The front USB-C socket is for data and up to 15 W accessory power, not a monitor.
- Display baseline
- Put one known-good FHD60 monitor on a rear DisplayPort or HDMI output and select that input. Add another screen only after confirming the exact laptop configuration and dock mode.
- G2 fallback or UltraSlim
- For Thunderbolt Dock G2, use the USB-C host lead and rear DisplayPort/USB-C video outputs—not the rear Thunderbolt socket. For UltraSlim, seat the laptop on its side docking connector.
- Power
- Read the original adapter label: HP lists 45 W, 65 W and 90 W configurations. G5 and G2 state up to 100 W to supported hosts; G4's highest host profile is 60 W. Verify the Windows charging state.
First recovery steps by symptom
Nothing on the dock works
- Identify the exact dock and connect its matching HP power supply.
- Reseat the single USB-C host cable or the UltraSlim side-dock connection with no extension or intermediate hub.
- Test the laptop with its original charger, then prove one USB accessory before reconnecting displays.
USB or Ethernet works but the display is blank
- Disconnect extra screens and connect one known-good FHD60 monitor to a rear DisplayPort or HDMI output.
- Select the monitor's exact input; on Thunderbolt Dock G2 fallback, do not use the rear Thunderbolt socket for video.
- Compare the laptop's direct HDMI or VGA output, then update the exact-model BIOS, graphics components and dock firmware before rebuilding the desk.
Charging is slow or absent
- Compare the laptop's original 45 W, 65 W or 90 W adapter label with the dock's host-delivery limit.
- Reseat the direct host connection and temporarily remove high-draw accessories.
- If the original charger restores charging, keep it attached while checking the dock supply, cable and firmware; this is especially relevant to the G4's 60 W ceiling.
One screen works but the full set does not
- Return to one FHD60 monitor and confirm it works alone on a rear video output.
- Add one display at a time without increasing resolution or refresh rate.
- Treat HP's higher dock display rows as conditional until the exact host DisplayPort revision, DSC support and cable path are established.
Still unknown: The exact unit's standard versus Hex Core support family, original adapter requirement, DisplayPort revision, DSC capability, simultaneous monitor modes, cable capability, current Windows 11 and firmware support, management behavior, sleep/wake reliability and field performance remain unknown. Applies only to HP ProBook 650 G4. If the service label or HP lookup identifies ProBook 650 G4 Hex Core, use only a dock record that explicitly covers that family; do not transfer a standard-only row. HP G5: ports, power and screen checks
| Check | For this setup |
|---|
| Computer cable | The attached G5 USB-C cable goes to the laptop’s video-capable USB-C port. |
|---|
| Screen cables | Use rear HDMI or DisplayPort. The front USB-C socket is for data and 15 W accessory power, not a monitor. |
|---|
| Two Full HD screens | Listed in every G5 bandwidth column, assuming the host supports the display count. Confirm the exact laptop configuration and OS. |
|---|
| Two 4K60 screens | Require DP 1.3/1.4 in high-resolution mode, or DP 1.4 with DSC in the default mode. A USB-C socket alone establishes neither. |
|---|
| Three 4K60 screens | Only listed with DP 1.4 DSC in high-resolution mode; all three rear video outputs are used. |
|---|
| Power | Up to 100 W to supported HP hosts. A workstation requiring more needs separate supported power. |

Thunderbolt G2 120W: an additional documented option
| Check | For this setup |
|---|
| Model match | 2UK37AA / 120 W version. Do not substitute the 230 W or combo-cable charging claim. |
|---|
| Monitor outputs | Two DisplayPorts, rear USB-C video, rear Thunderbolt and VGA. There is no built-in HDMI socket. |
|---|
| HDMI screen | Needs a correctly directed video adapter rated for the target mode. An HDMI cable alone does not fit this dock. |
|---|
| Two-screen evidence | The manufacturer lists the model/group. A combined display mode is a separate check. |
|---|
| Charging | Up to 100 W to the host; keep the laptop’s own charger available for verification. |
