EliteBook 850 G6 docks: choose native G2, UltraSlim or USB-C G5

Which dock options should you consider?

For HP EliteBook 850 G6, choose HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 (2UK37AA) for the best-documented native high-resolution route. HP's exact host table allows three displays total, including the built-in panel, and documents a dual-4K60 external arrangement. Choose UltraSlim Docking Station (D9Y32AA) when you prefer its dedicated side connector and two DisplayPort outputs. USB-C Dock G5 (5TW10AA) is also named in the exact notebook QuickSpecs and in HP's later dock firmware, but HP does not publish the exact G5 multi-monitor timings for this host; use it for a simpler USB-C desk without assuming its generic maximums. The chassis size does not create a documented docking advantage over 840 G6: both use 45 W or 65 W host power classes and the same three-total-display boundary.

Connect displays and power

G2 connection

Connect the valid HP 120 W dock adapter first, then the dock's supplied Thunderbolt cable directly to the single notebook Thunderbolt 3 port.

G2 two-screen route

Use one dock DisplayPort and one rear Thunderbolt display path with a mode-rated adapter/cable for the conservative dual-4K60 arrangement. The notebook panel is the third total display.

UltraSlim route

Seat the notebook on the dedicated side connector, attach power and use the two dock DisplayPort outputs for dual 2560×1440 at 60 Hz.

G5 route

Connect its captive USB-C lead directly and start with one rear DisplayPort or HDMI screen at FHD60. Add the second without increasing modes until stability is established.

Power

The exact family has 45 W or 65 W adapter options. G2/G5 can negotiate up to 100 W; use at least a qualifying 65 W path for HP fast charge and retain the original adapter for isolation.

First recovery steps by symptom

Thunderbolt Dock G2 has no LED or devices

1. Confirm the rear adapter LED is white; HP says the dock rejects a nonqualifying adapter and will not function.
2. Reconnect the HP 120 W-or-larger adapter, sign in and approve the dock in the Thunderbolt prompt if required.
3. If needed, shut down, remove host and dock power for five seconds, power the dock first and test one USB device.

A docked monitor is blank after sleep or hot-plug

1. Disconnect extra screens, select the remaining monitor input and use Windows+P to select Extend.
2. Begin at FHD60 on one documented output; on an affected HP monitor set DisplayPort Hot-Plug Detection to Always Active.
3. Compare direct notebook HDMI at no more than its documented 4K30 ceiling, then update exact BIOS, graphics and dock firmware before rebuilding the desk.

A USB-A device is absent during boot

1. Test the USB device directly after Windows loads to separate boot enumeration from a failed peripheral.
2. Update the exact notebook BIOS; HP's advisory requires R70 01.22.00 or later for the affected 840 G6/850 G6 USB-C-hub case.
3. Reconnect the dock and peripherals individually after the update, without interrupting any dock firmware flash.

The notebook does not charge through the dock

1. Verify the matching dock power supply, G2 rear LED and intact host cable, then remove high-draw USB devices.
2. Compare with the original 45 W or 65 W HP adapter connected directly.
3. If direct charging returns, update the exact dock firmware and notebook BIOS; treat this as a dock power-path issue, not a display result.

Still unknown: The exact USB-C Dock G5 resolution combinations on EliteBook 850 G6 are not published in the reviewed host table. Exact displays, EDIDs, cable and adapter quality, mixed refresh and color depth, HDR, DSC, MST adapters, lid behavior, Radeon 550X routing, Windows 11 behavior against the Windows-10-era table, Linux or FreeDOS dock software, sleep/wake stability and sustained field performance remain unknown. No physical equipment was tested.
