EliteBook 830 G5 docks: exact G2, UltraSlim and G5 paths

HP's exact table distinguishes the dual-4K Thunderbolt wiring from the mechanical dual-2.5K path; newer G5 claims remain host-conditional.

Which dock options should you consider?

For HP EliteBook 830 G5, choose HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 (2UK37AA) when you need the strongest exact two-display evidence: HP documents two external 4K60 screens only when one uses dock DisplayPort and the other uses the rear Thunderbolt display path. Choose UltraSlim Docking Station D9Y32AA for a mechanical side-connector desk with two external 2560×1440-at-60-Hz screens on its two DisplayPorts. HP USB-C Dock G5 (5TW10AA) is also exact-model-listed and provides up to 100 W from its 120 W supply, but its generic dual-4K and three-screen tables depend on host DisplayPort revision/DSC that HP never states for this notebook. Use G5 as the current common-port choice, beginning with two FHD screens rather than promising its generic maximum.

HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 / 2UK37AA

HP's exact 830 G5 table establishes two external 4K60 screens with a specific one-DisplayPort plus one-rear-Thunderbolt arrangement.

Check first: Use the 120 W dock supply and 3XB94AA host cable in the notebook's Thunderbolt port. Do not substitute two dock DisplayPort sockets for the documented dual-4K path.

HP UltraSlim Docking Station / D9Y32AA

HP exact-lists the mechanical side dock and documents two external 2560×1440-at-60-Hz screens through its two DisplayPorts.

Check first: Seat the notebook fully on the side docking connector and power the dock. This is the least ambiguous legacy fleet arrangement.

HP USB-C Dock G5 / 5TW10AA

HP's July 2020 G5 sheet names EliteBook 830 G5, while the current dock page supplies two DisplayPorts, HDMI and up to 100 W host power.

Check first: Connect the captive host lead to the Thunderbolt/USB-C port and use only rear video outputs. Exact dock-facing DP revision and DSC are unpublished, so qualify screens from two FHD60 upward.

Connect displays and power

Thunderbolt G2 cable
Power 2UK37AA with its 120 W supply and connect HP host cable 3XB94AA to the notebook's single Thunderbolt USB-C port.
Thunderbolt G2 displays
For HP's exact dual-4K60 arrangement, use one dock DisplayPort and the rear Thunderbolt display path. The notebook panel counts toward the documented three-display total.
UltraSlim displays
Seat the notebook on its proprietary side connector and use both dock DisplayPort outputs for the documented dual-2560×1440-at-60-Hz route.
USB-C G5 displays
Use rear DisplayPort or HDMI. The front USB-C port is data plus 15 W accessory power, not a monitor output; begin with two FHD60 screens because higher G5 modes are host-conditional.
Power
The notebook's UMA operating power is under 45 W, while HP fast charge requires a qualifying 65 W adapter. G2/G5 supply up to 100 W to supported hosts, but use the exact dock supply and cable.

First recovery steps by symptom

USB or Ethernet works but a screen is blank

  1. Reduce to one known-good monitor and cable, select its input and use a documented rear dock video output.
  2. Direct-test that display on the notebook HDMI port at no more than its documented 4K24 ceiling.
  3. On G2 dual-4K, place the second screen on the rear Thunderbolt display path rather than the second DisplayPort.

The notebook does not charge

  1. Verify the exact dock, supply and host cable: 5TW10AA with its 120 W supply, or 2UK37AA with 3XB94AA and the 120 W supply.
  2. Remove high-draw devices and reseat the host cable in the notebook Thunderbolt port.
  3. Compare direct charging with a known-good HP adapter rated at least 65 W before treating the dock as the fault.

The entire dock is missing or intermittent

  1. Disconnect the host, dock AC and peripherals, then reconnect dock AC before the host cable.
  2. Prove one USB device and one screen before restoring the full desk.
  3. Update the exact notebook BIOS/Thunderbolt software and exact dock firmware; HP does not publish a special 830 G5 button-reset sequence in the reviewed sources.

Thunderbolt G2 has reduced video capability

  1. Verify the dock is attached to the notebook's Thunderbolt port and that Thunderbolt software is version 17.x or later.
  2. Check device authorization or managed security settings, then reconnect the dock after sign-in.
  3. Update G2 firmware on a supported Windows host; a USB-C alternate-mode fallback has lower display modes and no rear-Thunderbolt video.

Still unknown: HP does not state the exact dock-facing DisplayPort revision or DSC support for EliteBook 830 G5, so USB-C Dock G5 dual-4K or three-external-screen behavior is not established. The exact CPU SKU, Windows 11 eligibility, monitor EDIDs, cables/adapters, mixed refresh and color depth, HDR, current BIOS/Thunderbolt/dock firmware, lid behavior, sleep/wake stability and field reliability remain unknown. No equipment was tested.

HP G5: ports, power and screen checks

CheckFor this setup
Computer cableThe attached G5 USB-C cable goes to the laptop’s video-capable USB-C port.
Screen cablesUse rear HDMI or DisplayPort. The front USB-C socket is for data and 15 W accessory power, not a monitor.
Two Full HD screensListed in every G5 bandwidth column, assuming the host supports the display count. Confirm the exact laptop configuration and OS.
Two 4K60 screensRequire DP 1.3/1.4 in high-resolution mode, or DP 1.4 with DSC in the default mode. A USB-C socket alone establishes neither.
Three 4K60 screensOnly listed with DP 1.4 DSC in high-resolution mode; all three rear video outputs are used.
PowerUp to 100 W to supported HP hosts. A workstation requiring more needs separate supported power.
