EliteBook 745 G6 docks: choose USB-C first, qualify the G2 path

HP names two dock families for this AMD notebook, but it does not publish an exact combined-screen table for either pairing.

Which dock options should you consider?

For HP EliteBook 745 G6, HP USB-C Dock G5 is the least ambiguous documented choice: HP's July 2020 compatibility sheet names the exact notebook, the dock uses one captive USB-C host cable, and it can supply up to 100 W to supported HP systems. Start with one or two FHD60 screens on the rear video outputs; HP's generic two-4K and three-screen G5 modes depend on the host's DisplayPort revision, DSC and dock display mode, none of which HP establishes for this exact model. HP's 2019 table also lists Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 (2UK37AA), but the 745 G6 is an AMD USB-C host rather than a documented Thunderbolt host. Treat that listing as a USB-C fallback/reuse path, not proof that rear-Thunderbolt video or a particular multi-monitor mode works.

HP USB-C Dock G5 / 5TW10AA

HP's July 2020 compatibility document names EliteBook 745 G6, and G5 is the direct native USB-C option with up to 100 W host delivery.

Check first: Use the dock's attached host cable and 120 W supply. Begin with one or two FHD60 screens; higher modes remain conditional on unpublished host DisplayPort/DSC details.

HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 / 2UK37AA

HP's 2019 compatibility table includes the 745 G6, so it is a documented legacy reuse option.

Check first: Use only the 120 W 2UK37AA package. The host is not documented as Thunderbolt, so expect USB-C fallback limits and do not promise the dock's rear-Thunderbolt display path.

Other HP or third-party docks — unconfirmed

No additional exact-model match was established in the reviewed official documents.

Check first: Do not infer compatibility from USB-C shape, brand or wattage. Require an exact manufacturer row and verify host video, power delivery and the combined screen mode before purchase.

Connect displays and power

G5 host cable
Power the G5 with its matching 120 W adapter, then connect the captive USB-C cable directly to the notebook's video-capable USB-C port.
G5 monitor outputs
Use the two rear DisplayPorts or rear HDMI. The front USB-C socket is data plus 15 W accessory power and is not a monitor output.
Safe display baseline
Start with one screen at FHD60, then add a second. Two 4K60 or three-screen claims require host DP/DSC evidence that HP does not publish for this exact notebook.
G2 fallback
Attach the G2 host cable directly and use its DisplayPort outputs first. There is no built-in HDMI socket, and rear-Thunderbolt video is not established on this non-Thunderbolt host.
Power
Both documented dock packages can provide up to 100 W to supported HP hosts. That is a dock ceiling, not a measurement of this notebook; retain the original HP adapter for isolation.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing on the dock responds

  1. Disconnect the host cable, dock AC and peripherals.
  2. Reconnect the dock's matching AC adapter first, then attach its supplied host cable directly to the notebook USB-C port.
  3. Prove one USB device before restoring Ethernet and displays.

USB works but a monitor is blank

  1. Reduce the desk to one FHD60 monitor on a rear dock video output and select that input manually.
  2. Reseat the monitor cable and host cable, then use Windows Display Detect.
  3. If G2 is in use, begin on DisplayPort and do not rely on rear-Thunderbolt video; add the second screen only after the first is stable.

Charging is absent or slow

  1. Confirm the exact dock package, matching power brick and captive/supplied host cable.
  2. Remove high-draw dock accessories and reconnect the USB-C host lead directly.
  3. Compare direct charging with the original HP adapter; if direct charging works, update dock firmware and treat dock delivery or cabling as the boundary.

The dock disconnects after sleep

  1. Power-cycle the dock and reconnect it after Windows has resumed.
  2. Install the exact EliteBook BIOS, graphics/USB components and the selected dock firmware from HP.
  3. Retest with one peripheral and one monitor before rebuilding the desk.

Still unknown: HP does not publish the exact dock-facing DisplayPort revision, DSC status, combined monitor table or Thunderbolt-fallback feature set for EliteBook 745 G6. The installed Ryzen configuration, monitor EDIDs, cables/adapters, mixed refresh and color depth, HDR, current BIOS and dock firmware, Windows build, sleep/wake behavior, actual charging rate and physical field reliability remain unknown. Connect Your Dock did not test this hardware.

HP G5: ports, power and screen checks

CheckFor this setup
Computer cableThe attached G5 USB-C cable goes to the laptop’s video-capable USB-C port.
Screen cablesUse rear HDMI or DisplayPort. The front USB-C socket is for data and 15 W accessory power, not a monitor.
Two Full HD screensListed in every G5 bandwidth column, assuming the host supports the display count. Confirm the exact laptop configuration and OS.
Two 4K60 screensRequire DP 1.3/1.4 in high-resolution mode, or DP 1.4 with DSC in the default mode. A USB-C socket alone establishes neither.
Three 4K60 screensOnly listed with DP 1.4 DSC in high-resolution mode; all three rear video outputs are used.
PowerUp to 100 W to supported HP hosts. A workstation requiring more needs separate supported power.

Thunderbolt G2 120W: an additional documented option

CheckFor this setup
Model match2UK37AA / 120 W version. Do not substitute the 230 W or combo-cable charging claim.
Monitor outputsTwo DisplayPorts, rear USB-C video, rear Thunderbolt and VGA. There is no built-in HDMI socket.
HDMI screenNeeds a correctly directed video adapter rated for the target mode. An HDMI cable alone does not fit this dock.
Two-screen evidenceThe manufacturer lists the model/group. A combined display mode is a separate check.
ChargingUp to 100 W to the host; keep the laptop’s own charger available for verification.

Before choosing a dock

  1. Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
  2. Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
  3. Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
  4. Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
