EliteBook 745 G5 docks: USB-C and mechanical choices without Thunderbolt assumptions

HP exact-lists USB-C Dock G5 and several legacy choices, but this AMD notebook's USB-C host path is DisplayPort Alt Mode rather than Thunderbolt.

Which dock options should you consider?

For HP EliteBook 745 G5, start with HP USB-C Dock G5 / 5TW10AA for a current exact-listed USB-C desk, or use HP UltraSlim Docking Station / D9Y32AA when reusing the notebook's proprietary mechanical-dock connector. HP also lists USB-C Dock G4 and Thunderbolt Dock G2, but this AMD host has one USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode port and no documented Thunderbolt. Treat Thunderbolt G2 as a USB-C fallback with the later, lower DP 1.2 limits—one QHD60 or two 1920×1200 screens—not the older model table's conflicting dual-4K row. Connector fit and an exact list do not create Thunderbolt bandwidth.

HP USB-C Dock G5 / 5TW10AA

HP's July 2020 table names EliteBook 745 G5 exactly; G5 supplies rear HDMI and two DisplayPort outputs with up to 100 W for supported HP hosts.

Check first: The notebook's DP 1.2 USB-C path remains the limit. Start with one FHD60 screen; two QHD60 or one 4K60 are dock ceilings in high-resolution mode, not a tested promise for this desk.

HP UltraSlim Docking Station / D9Y32AA

HP's exact 2018 QuickSpecs lists this mechanical dock, making it a useful choice for an existing proprietary HP desk without routing video through USB-C.

Check first: It requires the notebook's mechanical docking connector and is a legacy reuse option. Confirm the exact power supply, DisplayPort cables and current support before buying used hardware.

HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 / 2UK37AA — USB-C fallback only

HP exact-lists the pairing, but the notebook itself is not documented with Thunderbolt.

Check first: Use the later DP 1.2 USB-C limits: one QHD60 or two 1920×1200 displays. The dock's downstream Thunderbolt video output becomes USB 2.0 data/power only, and dual 4K is not claimed.

Connect displays and power

USB-C host cable
Power G5 with its matching 120 W supply and connect its attached 1 m host cable directly to the notebook's single USB-C Alt Mode port.
G5 displays
Use rear DisplayPort or HDMI. Begin with one FHD60 screen and add a second only after the first input, cable and mode are stable.
UltraSlim path
Seat the notebook on the exact UltraSlim mechanical connector, use the dock's DisplayPort outputs and keep that path separate from USB-C diagnosis.
Power
HP lists 45 W and 65 W adapters but qualifies Fast Charge for 65 W. Verify charging in Windows and compare with a 65 W HP adapter if speed matters.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing on the dock works

  1. Confirm whether the desk uses the USB-C or UltraSlim mechanical path and verify the matching dock supply.
  2. For G5, reseat the fixed host cable in the notebook's only USB-C Alt Mode port; for UltraSlim, fully reseat the notebook on the connector.
  3. Test the original HP charger and one USB device before adding displays.

USB works but a display is blank

  1. Remove extra screens, select the remaining monitor's exact input and begin at 1920×1080 60 Hz.
  2. Use one documented rear output with a known-good cable; on Thunderbolt G2 USB-C fallback, do not use the downstream Thunderbolt socket for video.
  3. Add a second screen only after the first is stable and keep the later lower DP 1.2 limits.

Charging is slow or absent

  1. Check Windows charging state and the exact dock power supply.
  2. Reconnect the host or mechanical dock and remove high-draw accessories during the test.
  3. Compare against an HP 65 W adapter; 45 W can power listed configurations but does not carry HP's Fast Charge qualification.

Still unknown: HP's 2018 exact-model table conflicts with its later non-Thunderbolt USB-C fallback limits, so the lower later ceiling is used. Current Windows 11 support, BIOS and dock firmware, high-resolution mode, legacy dock feature support, cable and monitor combinations, sleep/wake behavior and physical results remain unknown.

HP G5: ports, power and screen checks

CheckFor this setup
Computer cableThe attached G5 USB-C cable goes to the laptop’s video-capable USB-C port.
Screen cablesUse rear HDMI or DisplayPort. The front USB-C socket is for data and 15 W accessory power, not a monitor.
Two Full HD screensListed in every G5 bandwidth column, assuming the host supports the display count. Confirm the exact laptop configuration and OS.
Two 4K60 screensRequire DP 1.3/1.4 in high-resolution mode, or DP 1.4 with DSC in the default mode. A USB-C socket alone establishes neither.
Three 4K60 screensOnly listed with DP 1.4 DSC in high-resolution mode; all three rear video outputs are used.
PowerUp to 100 W to supported HP hosts. A workstation requiring more needs separate supported power.

Thunderbolt G2 120W: an additional documented option

CheckFor this setup
Model match2UK37AA / 120 W version. Do not substitute the 230 W or combo-cable charging claim.
Monitor outputsTwo DisplayPorts, rear USB-C video, rear Thunderbolt and VGA. There is no built-in HDMI socket.
HDMI screenNeeds a correctly directed video adapter rated for the target mode. An HDMI cable alone does not fit this dock.
Two-screen evidenceThe manufacturer lists the model/group. A combined display mode is a separate check.
ChargingUp to 100 W to the host; keep the laptop’s own charger available for verification.

Before choosing a dock

  1. Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
  2. Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
  3. Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
  4. Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
