Zenbook S 14 UX5406SA docks: native Thunderbolt first, DisplayLink only when needed

The SA model has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI and a 65 W USB-C adapter, but ASUS does not publish an exact docked display ceiling.

Which dock options should you consider?

For ASUS Zenbook S 14 UX5406SA on supported Windows 11, start with a native Thunderbolt dock. ASUS DC500 is the clearest same-brand option when built-in HDMI plus a downstream Thunderbolt display path is useful; CalDigit TS4 is a native alternative for a DisplayPort screen plus a second screen from downstream Thunderbolt; Plugable TBT4-UDZ is the port-rich native alternative when built-in HDMI/DisplayPort sockets matter. These are compatibility conclusions from separate host and dock specifications, not ASUS-approved pair tests. Use Plugable UD-6950PDH only as a DisplayLink software fallback when installation permission is acceptable. The notebook has two Thunderbolt 4 ports with display and PD, HDMI 2.1 TMDS and a 65 W USB-C adapter, but ASUS does not publish DSC support or an exact external-display count, so dock-level triple/four-display maximums stay qualified.

ASUS DC500 — native Thunderbolt

Its Thunderbolt 4 host requirement matches the exact notebook specification, and it provides built-in HDMI plus downstream Thunderbolt display connectivity.

Check first: Use the supplied Thunderbolt cable. Up to 96 W is a dock ceiling, not proof of the notebook's negotiated rate; exact multi-display modes remain untested.

CalDigit TS4 or Plugable TBT4-UDZ — native alternatives

Choose TS4 for DisplayPort plus downstream-Thunderbolt wiring, or TBT4-UDZ when built-in HDMI/DisplayPort sockets are preferable.

Check first: On TS4, HDMI needs an active DP-to-HDMI or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and only downstream Thunderbolt carries video. Treat both vendors' display maxima as dock ceilings.

Plugable UD-6950PDH — software fallback

DisplayLink can provide two screens when a software-rendered path is acceptable, but it is not the first choice for a native Thunderbolt laptop.

Check first: Windows DisplayLink installation and administrator permission are required; protected HDCP playback is not supported and exact charging remains conditional.

Connect displays and power

Exact notebook
Match UX5406SA, not UX5406AA or another suffix. ASUS lists Windows 11 and directs this model's drivers to Windows 11 24H2 or later.
Native host cable
Power the dock first, then use its supplied Thunderbolt host cable directly in either notebook Thunderbolt 4 port without an extension or intermediate hub.
DC500 displays
Begin with one direct HDMI or downstream-Thunderbolt display. Add screens only within both the DC500 table and the unknown exact-host ceiling; DSC-dependent triple modes remain unconfirmed.
TS4/TBT4-UDZ displays
On TS4 use DisplayPort and/or downstream Thunderbolt; its other USB-C ports are data-only. On TBT4-UDZ use the documented HDMI/DisplayPort outputs and add one display at a time.
Power
The notebook's documented adapter is 65 W USB-C. Compare direct charging with it; a dock's 96/98/100 W ceiling does not show what this exact notebook negotiates.
DisplayLink path
For UD-6950PDH, install the current Windows DisplayLink software with authorization before connecting displays; this path is distinct from native Thunderbolt video.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing on the dock works

  1. Power the exact dock with its matching supply and remove all accessories.
  2. Attach the dock's supplied host cable directly to either notebook Thunderbolt 4 port.
  3. Try the other Thunderbolt port and prove one USB device before displays.

The notebook charges but a display is blank

  1. Start with one FHD60 or 4K60 screen, select its input and reseat the direct cable.
  2. On TS4, use DisplayPort or a downstream Thunderbolt port rather than a data-only USB-C port.
  3. Compare the same monitor on notebook HDMI, then update exact UX5406SA graphics/System Control Interface and dock firmware.

One screen works but additional screens fail

  1. Return to one ordinary screen mode and remove converters.
  2. Add displays one at a time using outputs allowed by the exact dock manual.
  3. Do not infer triple or four-display support from the dock alone; exact host DSC and display count remain unknown.

The notebook does not charge

  1. Verify the dock supply and supplied host cable without an extension.
  2. Remove high-draw peripherals and reconnect through either notebook Thunderbolt port.
  3. Compare with the 65 W ASUS USB-C charger; if direct charging works, isolate dock firmware, supply and PD negotiation.

DisplayLink video is blank or protected playback fails

  1. Confirm the current Windows DisplayLink driver and administrator approval for UD-6950PDH.
  2. Restart the DisplayLink service or reconnect one display after the driver loads.
  3. Treat HDCP-protected playback failure as a documented limitation, not a native Thunderbolt fault.

Still unknown: ASUS does not publish the exact UX5406SA external-display count, DSC support or a validated pairing with any listed dock. The regional SKU, negotiated charge rate, dock firmware, monitor EDIDs, cables/adapters, mixed resolution and refresh, HDR/color depth, enterprise installation policy, Windows build behavior, sleep/wake stability and physical reliability remain unknown. Dock-vendor maxima are not exact-host results, and no hardware was tested.
