Which dock options should you consider?

For Surface Laptop 6 for Business, choose Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock when you want a standards-based Thunderbolt 4/USB4 connection and USB-C display outputs; Microsoft lists this exact computer and supplies up to 96 W passthrough. Choose Surface Dock 2 when you prefer the magnetic Surface Connect host cable and its two rear USB-C display ports; Microsoft lists the same computer and up to 120 W passthrough. Microsoft's exact laptop display table allows up to two external 3840×2160 displays at 60 Hz over USB-C, but cables, adapters and the chosen dock can lower that ceiling.

Microsoft Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock

Microsoft explicitly lists Surface Laptop 6 for Business and describes a 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4/USB4 path with up to 96 W host power.

Check first: Monitors connect through USB-C video cables or adapters; the dock has no built-in HDMI or DisplayPort socket.

Microsoft Surface Dock 2

Microsoft explicitly lists the model and provides the magnetic Surface Connect path with two rear USB-C monitor ports and up to 120 W passthrough.

Check first: Use the rear USB-C display ports. The front USB-C ports are for accessories, not the documented monitor path.

Direct USB-C / Thunderbolt display

A direct connection is the clean baseline for testing the laptop, adapter and monitor before adding a dock.

Check first: The host table's two-4K60 ceiling is not a guarantee for every dock, cable, adapter, HDR or refresh-rate combination.

Connect displays and power

Thunderbolt dock cable
Connect the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock's supplied Thunderbolt cable directly to the laptop USB-C/Thunderbolt port.
Surface Dock 2 cable
Connect the fixed magnetic Surface Connect cable to the laptop; connect displays to the two rear USB-C monitor ports.
Display adapters
Use USB-C video cables or active adapters appropriate to the monitor input. Prove one 4K60 display before adding a second.
Power
Use the dock's supplied 165 W adapter for the Thunderbolt 4 Dock or 199 W adapter for Surface Dock 2; Microsoft states 96 W and 120 W maximum passthrough respectively.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing on the dock works

  1. Confirm the dock is connected to its supplied AC adapter.
  2. Reseat the Thunderbolt or Surface Connect host cable directly.
  3. Test one USB accessory, then update Surface firmware through supported Windows Update before adding displays.

One display works but the second is blank

  1. Test each display alone with its existing cable and selected input.
  2. On Surface Dock 2, use the two rear USB-C display ports; on the Thunderbolt dock, use documented USB-C video paths.
  3. Set both displays to 3840×2160 at 60 Hz or lower before testing higher or mixed modes.

Charging is slow or absent

  1. Check the exact Microsoft power adapter is attached to the dock.
  2. Inspect and reseat the host connector, then check Windows charging status.
  3. Compare with the original Surface power adapter; if that works, isolate the dock supply and host cable.

Still unknown: Microsoft does not validate every HDMI/DisplayPort adapter, cable length, monitor firmware, HDR, variable-refresh, mixed-mode, sleep/wake or third-party dock combination. The page applies to the business model name in Microsoft's documents; a machine sold under a different Surface Laptop label needs exact model identification.
