Applies to: X1 Carbon Gen 12 and WD22TB4. Interface-based assessment from Lenovo and Dell documentation; no exact-pair hardware test is claimed.

Separate interface evidence from deployment evidence

Lenovo’s specification lists two Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40 Gbps ports with USB Power Delivery and DisplayPort support. Dell publishes cross-brand dock compatibility conditions. Together these support checking the combination; neither is a Connect Your Dock test of a particular desk. Lenovo: X1 Carbon Gen 12 specifications (PDF) · Dell: cross-brand dock compatibility

Record the exact machine type and dock firmware. Avoid turning the shared interface standard into a promise about all high-resolution screens, wake behavior or workplace management features.

Which features need their own checks?

FeatureCheck before relying on it
Independent displaysSupported WD22TB4 output arrangement and modes for the host.
Power deliveryHost requirement versus actual cross-brand delivery.
Dock power buttonExplicit cross-brand support; use the laptop button as the baseline.
Corporate Ethernet featuresIT-approved driver and identity configuration.

Dell’s non-Dell guidance places limits on vendor-specific features. A usable video-and-USB desk need not have identical management behavior to an all-Dell deployment.

Test before committing the whole desk

  1. Connect the powered dock to one of the specified Thunderbolt ports using the intended host cable.
  2. Establish one monitor at a supported mode.
  3. Add the second and confirm Windows exposes separate extended desktops.
  4. Add required peripherals individually and note any device that triggers a failure.
  5. Compare charging under a normal workload with the Lenovo charger.
  6. Test a cold start, a reconnect and a sleep/wake cycle, using the laptop’s controls.

A useful result has a scope

If the desk passes, retain the model, OS, firmware, output pair and selected modes in your private setup record. That evidence can support maintaining this desk without making claims about every X1 Carbon or every Dell dock.

If a critical feature fails, ask the relevant supplier about that exact feature and configuration. A returnable trial or a documented IT-approved combination is more defensible than an unconditional compatibility badge based only on connector standards.
