Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra monitor choices: direct HDMI, Wireless DeX or tablet-only DeX

Samsung documents three useful DeX paths for the Tab S8 series, but it does not exact-certify an arbitrary full USB-C dock or multi-monitor desk.

Which dock options should you consider?

For Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, the documented wired monitor path is a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable connected directly to one display; unlock the tablet and start DeX after the display is attached. Wireless DeX is the cable-free alternative for a Miracast-capable TV or monitor, with distance and latency tradeoffs. If no external display is needed, the Tab S8 series can run DeX on the tablet itself with the touchscreen, S Pen, Book Cover Keyboard, or USB/Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Samsung's current DeX guide does not exact-name a full USB-C dock, multiport hub, Ethernet behavior, passthrough charging wattage or a multi-monitor arrangement for Tab S8 Ultra, so those remain unconfirmed even when HDMI happens to work. DeX for PC is not available on Galaxy tablets; do not use that PC workflow as the recovery path.

Direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable

Samsung explicitly includes the Tab S8 series in the wired HDMI-capable DeX path and describes a standard USB-C-to-HDMI connection.

Check first: Use one direct adapter/cable and one display first. Samsung does not publish an exact Tab S8 Ultra resolution, refresh or passthrough-power result in the reviewed guide.

Wireless DeX to a Miracast display

Samsung explicitly includes the Tab S8 series in Wireless DeX support and documents TV/monitor connection from the DeX menu.

Check first: The target must support Miracast and remain nearby. Touchscreen control on the external display is not supported, and wireless latency remains environment-dependent.

DeX on the tablet screen

Samsung documents on-tablet DeX for the Tab S8 series, which avoids an unverified dock and is useful with a keyboard and mouse.

Check first: Classic versus New DeX depends on the installed One UI version. This is a tablet-only workspace, not an external-monitor or dock claim.

Connect displays and power

Wired display
Connect one direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable from the tablet to the display, select the display's HDMI input, unlock the tablet and start DeX.
Input devices
Use the touchscreen or S Pen as a touchpad, or pair a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. A USB keyboard or mouse may be attached only through an accessory whose support has been separately established.
Wireless display
Open DeX, choose DeX on TV or monitor, select the nearby Miracast display and accept the prompt on that display. Keep the devices close for the first test.
Tablet-only desk
Start DeX on the tablet and use the Book Cover Keyboard, touchscreen, S Pen or paired input devices; no video cable or full dock is required.
Power
Charge with a supported Samsung USB-C charger as the direct reference. The reviewed DeX guide does not establish passthrough charging or a negotiated wattage through a multiport adapter.
Full dock boundary
Ethernet, USB accessories, simultaneous charging, multiple displays and proprietary dock buttons remain unverified for an arbitrary hub or dock; port count is not compatibility evidence.

First recovery steps by symptom

The wired screen stays blank

  1. Select the display's HDMI input and reduce the path to one direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable.
  2. Unlock the tablet, open DeX and choose the connected display; reseat both cable ends.
  3. Test the same display and HDMI cable with another source, then restart the tablet before trying another exact adapter.

Wireless DeX cannot find the display

  1. Confirm the TV or monitor supports Miracast and enable its screen-mirroring mode.
  2. Move the tablet close to the display, reopen DeX on TV or monitor and accept the display prompt.
  3. Restart both devices and remove stale wireless-display pairings before trying again.

Keyboard or mouse does not work

  1. For Bluetooth, remove and re-pair one input device while DeX is running.
  2. For a Book Cover Keyboard, detach and reseat it, then retry on-tablet DeX.
  3. For USB input through a hub, test Bluetooth instead; the hub path is not established by the reviewed Samsung guide.

The tablet does not charge through an adapter

  1. Disconnect the display adapter and verify direct charging with a supported Samsung charger and cable.
  2. If direct charging works, inspect the adapter's documented USB-PD passthrough requirements rather than assuming support.
  3. Use direct charging while the adapter's exact power negotiation remains unresolved.

DeX for PC is missing

  1. Do not reinstall a PC client as the first step; Samsung says DeX for PC is not available on Galaxy tablets.
  2. Use direct HDMI, Wireless DeX or on-tablet DeX instead.
  3. Update the tablet and recheck the installed One UI DeX mode if those documented paths are absent.

Still unknown: Samsung's reviewed guide does not publish an exact Tab S8 Ultra wired resolution or refresh ceiling, multi-monitor support, an approved full-dock list, Ethernet behavior, USB accessory limits, adapter passthrough-power negotiation, HDCP behavior, monitor EDIDs, mixed audio routing, cable capability, One UI-specific quirks, wireless latency, sleep/wake stability or physical reliability. A generic hub may work in part without being documented as a complete dock. No hardware or Miracast display was tested.

CheckFor this setup
Wired HDMIThis tablet is in Samsung’s wired DeX list. Use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI video adapter/cable.
What to expectSelect the monitor’s HDMI input and open the applicable DeX mode. Mirroring alone does not confirm an external desktop.
ResolutionNo exact monitor resolution or refresh-rate guarantee is established by this compatibility list.
PowerA plain video cable does not add a charging socket. Confirm an adapter’s USB-C power-input support if simultaneous charging is needed.
Dock choicesThe laptop-dock catalog is not evidence of Android compatibility. Exact dock video, charging and peripheral support remain unreviewed.

Device-specific limits

Samsung lists this tablet family for wired DeX through a compatible HDMI accessory. Check the accessory and monitor mode; a full dock is not automatically certified.

Check one screen without a dock

Before choosing a dock

  1. Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
  2. Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
  3. Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
  4. Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
