Which dock options should you consider?
For ThinkPad E16 Gen 3 Intel machine types 21SR/21SS, Lenovo's September 2026 OCM exact-lists Universal USB-C Dock packages 40AY0090US and 40AY0135US plus Thunderbolt 4 Workstation Dock 40B00300US, Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B00135US and Smart Dock 40B10135US. Choose between the two USB-C packages by the exact bundle and verified dock-to-host delivery rather than reading 90 W or 135 W as laptop power; the host's documented adapter class is 65 W. Pick a Thunderbolt package when you need Thunderbolt peripherals, then use the always-present Thunderbolt 4 port. Platform matters: Lunar Lake gives two Thunderbolt 4 ports but a two-external-display host ceiling, while the other listed platforms have one Thunderbolt 4 port, one USB 20 Gbps USB-C port and a three-external-display ceiling.
Universal USB-C Dock / 40AY0135US
Lenovo exact-lists this 135 W-adapter package for 21SR/21SS as a native non-Thunderbolt desk option.
Check first: Confirm the package label and actual advertised host delivery covers the 65 W host class. Connect to a video/PD-capable USB-C port; do not infer the brick's full 135 W reaches the laptop.
Universal USB-C Dock / 40AY0090US
This 90 W-adapter package is also an exact OCM match and may suit a modest USB-C desk.
Check first: Verify it delivers at least the host's 65 W requirement after the dock's own consumption. The package number, not the dock family name alone, determines the included supply.
Thunderbolt 4 packages / 40B00300US, 40B00135US or 40B10135US
Lenovo exact-lists all three packages and records PXE/network boot, wake and MAC-address passthrough behavior in the OCM code.
Check first: Use the always-present Thunderbolt 4 port. Identify Lunar Lake versus Raptor/Meteor/Arrow Lake before planning the second USB-C port or the number of external displays.
Connect displays and power
- Exact package
- Match machine type 21SR or 21SS and the complete regional dock package number in Lenovo's OCM; do not substitute a bare dock or another adapter bundle.
- Always-present port
- Use the standard Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 40 Gbps port for a Thunderbolt dock. It supports USB PD and DisplayPort 2.1 according to PSREF.
- Second USB-C port
- On Lunar Lake it is another Thunderbolt 4 port. On Raptor, Meteor or Arrow Lake it is USB 20 Gbps with DisplayPort 1.4, so do not transfer Thunderbolt behavior between configurations.
- Display ceiling
- Lunar Lake supports the notebook panel plus two external displays; the other listed platforms support the panel plus three. An 8K60 path consumes two display pipes and reduces simultaneous count by one.
- Power
- The host is offered with 65 W USB-C PD adapters. Verify dock host delivery of at least 65 W; a 90 W or 135 W package name is the AC-brick rating, not proof of laptop delivery.
First recovery steps by symptom
The notebook does not charge
- Check the complete dock package, its included AC adapter, AC cable and dock power indication.
- Reseat the supplied host cable in the charging-capable USB-C/Thunderbolt port and remove high-draw accessories.
- Compare with the original Lenovo 65 W USB-C adapter; if it works directly, verify the dock's actual host-delivery rating and firmware.
USB and Ethernet work but a display is blank
- Reduce to one monitor, select its input and reseat both the video cable and dock host cable.
- Begin at FHD60 and use Windows Display Detect before increasing resolution or count.
- Identify the processor platform and exact dock guide, then add screens without exceeding the host and dock intersection.
A Thunderbolt device is missing
- Move the dock to the always-present Thunderbolt 4 port rather than assuming the second USB-C port is Thunderbolt.
- Confirm the exact platform in Lenovo Vantage or the machine configuration, then approve the device if managed security requires it.
- Update the exact host BIOS/Thunderbolt components and dock firmware before retesting one peripheral.
PXE, wake or MAC passthrough fails
- Confirm the machine type and complete OCM-listed package rather than a visually similar dock bundle.
- Enable the corresponding BIOS and managed-network feature for the exact machine, then test with one network cable.
- Update host BIOS and exact dock firmware; the OCM code records support but does not prove the site's firmware, policy or switch configuration.
Still unknown: The exact processor platform, second-port transport, regional dock bundle, actual dock host-delivery wattage, dock firmware, cable, exact dock display matrix, monitor EDIDs, DSC path, mixed resolutions and refresh, HDR/color depth, managed Thunderbolt policy, PXE infrastructure, sleep/wake behavior and physical field reliability remain unknown. Lenovo's host ceilings and OCM cells are manufacturer evidence, not a tested desk.

Device-specific limits
Lenovo lists 5 dock configurations for machine type 21SR/21SS. Match the type code before using these results.
Before choosing a dock
- Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
- Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
- Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
- Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
