Which dock options should you consider?
For ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 ILL machine types 21U2/21U3, Lenovo's September 2026 matrix lists five exact US packages. Start with Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0135US when its documented 100 W host output and conventional two-DisplayPort-plus-HDMI layout fit the desk; 40AY0090US is the same dock with a 90 W supply and only 65 W host output. Choose Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B00135US for the Thunderbolt path and up to 100 W host power, or Smart Dock 40B10135US only when its managed-dock functions matter. The ILL variant has one USB-C power connector with Thunderbolt 4. Although Workstation Dock 40B00300US is an exact matrix match, its 230 W path uses a split Thunderbolt-plus-Slim-Tip cable and the E14 has no adjacent Slim-Tip input, so it is not the clear charging choice.
Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0135US or 40AY0090US
Lenovo lists both for 21U2/21U3 with network boot, wake and MAC passthrough. The 135 W package supplies up to 100 W to the host; the 90 W package supplies up to 65 W.
Check first: The dock advertises up to two 4K60 outputs or three 4K30 outputs, but those are dock ceilings. Confirm the E14's combined mode and choose 40AY0135US when charging margin matters.
Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B00135US or Smart Dock 40B10135US
Both are exact matrix matches for the ILL machine types. 40B00135US supplies up to 100 W and adds downstream Thunderbolt; Smart is the centrally managed alternative.
Check first: Use the upstream host port, not the separate downstream Thunderbolt port. Four-output headlines are dock ceilings and do not prove the E14's exact screen modes; choose Smart only for managed features you will use.
Thunderbolt 4 Workstation Dock 40B00300US — reuse with caution
Lenovo lists the exact package for 21U2/21U3, so an existing fleet unit has matrix support for dock functions.
Check first: Its 230 W path uses a split Thunderbolt-plus-Slim-Tip cable, while E14 ILL has no adjacent Slim-Tip input. Do not expect the 300 W package to deliver workstation power through the E14's single USB-C port.
Connect displays and power
- Computer cable
- Power the dock with the supply for its exact package, then connect the dock's upstream USB-C or Thunderbolt cable directly to the ILL model's sole USB-C power connector / Thunderbolt 4 port.
- Variant check
- Match machine type 21U2 or 21U3 and the ILL side-view diagram. Other E14 Gen 7 processor variants can show an additional USB-C port that this answer does not assign to ILL.
- Displays
- For 40AY, use its two DisplayPort or one HDMI path; for 40B00135US, use its documented DisplayPort, HDMI or downstream Thunderbolt display routes. Start with one screen because the OCM does not publish an E14-specific combined-mode table.
- Power and direct fallback
- 40AY0135US and 40B00135US advertise up to 100 W host power; 40AY0090US advertises 65 W. Verify Windows charging, and use the notebook's HDMI port as a direct one-screen isolation path.
First recovery steps by symptom
Nothing on the dock works
- Read the full 40AY or 40B package number and connect its matching AC supply first.
- Reconnect the specified upstream cable directly to the ILL model's single Thunderbolt 4 / charging port, with no extension or second hub.
- Test one known-good USB accessory before adding displays or changing enterprise network settings.
USB works but a display is blank
- Reduce the desk to one monitor, select its exact input and use a dock output documented for the package.
- Begin at 1920×1080 60 Hz with a known-good cable, then compare the notebook's direct HDMI output.
- When direct video works, update the exact notebook BIOS, graphics and Thunderbolt components plus the exact dock firmware before restoring more screens.
Charging is slow or absent
- Check Windows charging state and confirm the dock supply belongs to the exact package; 40AY0090US is limited to 65 W host output.
- Reseat the supplied host cable and remove high-draw peripherals during the test.
- Compare with the notebook's original adapter; for 40B00300US, do not mistake its unavailable Slim-Tip leg for USB-C charging capacity.
Still unknown: Lenovo's exact matrix does not state the notebook's shipped adapter wattage, E14-specific combined display modes, GPU path, DSC, cable capability, monitor EDID, mixed resolutions or refresh rates, or physical sleep/wake reliability. Regional package equivalents, Smart Dock management behavior and the usable USB-C power path of 40B00300US on this no-Slim-Tip host remain unverified. No E14 Gen 7 ILL hardware was tested.
