Which dock options should you consider?
For ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 Intel machine types 21SX/21SY, use Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0090US for a conventional USB-C desk or 40AY0135US when the larger dock supply/package suits the fleet; both are exact-listed, but the notebook accepts 15–65 W over USB-C, so the 135 W package name does not imply faster charging. Choose Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B00135US when Thunderbolt peripherals or its output topology matter. Smart Dock 40B10135US and Workstation Dock 40B00300US are also exact-listed reuse packages, but users must follow each package's official host-cable and power instructions; the OCM row alone does not establish a preferred display or power arrangement. Identify the processor before planning screens: Raptor/Meteor/Arrow Lake configurations allow the panel plus three external displays; Lunar Lake allows the panel plus two. Those are host ceilings, not a one-dock guarantee.
Universal USB-C Dock / 40AY0090US or 40AY0135US
Both packages are exact-listed for 21SX/21SY and fit a conventional USB-C office desk.
Check first: Connect to the always-present USB4/Thunderbolt 4 port for the cleanest baseline. The 90/135 W package label is the dock supply, while host PD input is 15–65 W.
Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock / 40B00135US
This exact-listed package is the appropriate native choice when Thunderbolt peripherals or its documented output topology matter.
Check first: Use the supplied Thunderbolt cable in the always-present TB4/USB4 port and intersect the dock table with the processor-specific host display ceiling.
Smart 40B10135US or Workstation 40B00300US — exact-listed reuse
Both packages appear in the exact 21SX/21SY OCM columns, but that row alone does not make either a better display or power choice.
Check first: Confirm each package's official host-cable and power arrangement before reuse; do not derive notebook delivery from the dock supply label.
Connect displays and power
- Machine identity
- Match complete machine type 21SX or 21SY and regional package number in Lenovo's OCM; the five shown choices are a curated full-desk shortlist, not the whole matrix.
- Primary host port
- Use the always-present 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4/USB4 port with DisplayPort 2.1 and 15–65 W PD for the most consistent baseline.
- Second USB-C port
- Raptor/Meteor/Arrow Lake configurations get 20 Gbps USB-C with DP 1.4; Lunar Lake gets a second Thunderbolt 4 port. Identify the processor before relying on it.
- Display ceiling
- Raptor/Meteor/Arrow permit the panel plus three external displays; Lunar Lake permits the panel plus two. An 8K display consumes two pipes and reduces the remaining count.
- Power
- The family is offered with 65 W USB-C power. Verify actual regional configuration and dock host delivery; the dock AC-adapter rating includes dock overhead.
- Workstation package
- If reusing 40B00300US, follow Lenovo's exact cable and power instructions for that package; the OCM compatibility code alone does not establish a simplified single-cable arrangement.
First recovery steps by symptom
Nothing on the dock works
- Confirm 21SX/21SY, the complete dock package and its matching supply.
- Connect the specified host cable directly to the always-present Thunderbolt 4/USB4 port.
- Prove one USB device before reconnecting Ethernet and displays.
USB works but a monitor is blank
- Reduce to one FHD60 screen, select its input and test one documented dock output.
- Compare the same screen on the notebook's direct HDMI path.
- If HDMI works, update exact E14 BIOS, graphics/Thunderbolt components and dock firmware before adding displays.
Charging is slow or absent
- Verify the dock's complete package, matching supply and supplied host cable without extensions.
- Remove high-draw accessories and reconnect through the primary TB4/USB4 port.
- Compare with the original 65 W Lenovo adapter; do not infer notebook power from a 135/300 W dock package label.
A Thunderbolt peripheral is missing
- Use the always-present Thunderbolt 4/USB4 port rather than assuming the variable second port is Thunderbolt.
- Remove intermediate adapters and approve the peripheral if managed security requests it.
- Update exact host Thunderbolt components and dock firmware, then retest one peripheral.
PXE, wake or MAC passthrough fails
- Confirm machine type and exact OCM-listed package.
- Enable the matching BIOS/network setting and test one Ethernet cable.
- Update host and dock firmware; the OCM code does not validate the local switch, image or deployment policy.
Still unknown: The exact processor family, second USB-C implementation, regional SKU, shipped adapter, negotiated dock wattage, dock-specific combined display table, monitor EDIDs, DSC behavior, mixed resolution and refresh, HDR/color depth, cables/adapters, firmware, managed Thunderbolt policy, Linux behavior, enterprise network environment, sleep/wake and physical reliability remain unknown. Lenovo's OCM establishes package compatibility, not every display or power outcome; no hardware was tested.

Device-specific limits
Lenovo lists 5 dock configurations for machine type 21SX/21SY. Match the type code before using these results.
Before choosing a dock
- Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
- Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
- Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
- Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
