ThinkBook 16p Gen 5 IRX 21N5 docks: keep the 230 W or 300 W charger

Lenovo lists four dock packages for machine type 21N5, but every exact row says to connect the laptop adapter directly. This is a two-cable desk by design, not a one-cable charging replacement.

Which dock options should you consider?

For ThinkBook 16p Gen 5 IRX machine type 21N5, Lenovo lists Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0135US and 40AY0090US, USB-C Universal Business Dock 40B30090US and Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B00135US. Choose Thunderbolt 4 when its documented connection or peripherals matter; choose one of the USB-C packages for a documented reuse path. In every case, connect the laptop's own 230 W or 300 W Slim Tip adapter directly. The dock cable carries data and video; it does not replace this workstation-class power supply.

ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0135US or 40AY0090US

Lenovo's September 2026 matrix lists both exact 40AY packages for machine type 21N5, with network boot, wake and MAC-address passthrough notes.

Check first: Connect the laptop adapter directly for adequate charging. Confirm the exact 135 W or 90 W package supply and requested combined display modes separately.

Lenovo USB-C Universal Business Dock 40B30090US

Lenovo lists this exact business-dock package for 21N5, providing another documented USB-C path rather than an inference from the connector alone.

Check first: The laptop's own adapter is still required. The exact row does not promise every enterprise feature or monitor combination.

ThinkPad Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B00135US

Lenovo lists the exact Thunderbolt 4 package, matching the host's two Thunderbolt 4/USB4 connections and providing the clearest native high-bandwidth route of the four listed options.

Check first: Thunderbolt does not change the power rule: keep the 230 W or 300 W Slim Tip adapter connected directly, and verify the intended display arrangement.

Connect displays and power

Computer cable
Connect the selected dock's specified USB-C or Thunderbolt host cable directly to one of the laptop's two Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports. Avoid an extension or intermediary hub while establishing the baseline.
Display cables
Start with one monitor on one documented dock output. The laptop also has HDMI 2.1 and Thunderbolt video outputs for direct comparison; add other screens only after the first path is stable.
Power
Power the dock with its own specified supply and connect the ThinkBook's 230 W or 300 W Slim Tip adapter directly to the laptop. Lenovo requires this two-source arrangement for every listed dock row.
Host display ceiling
Lenovo lists up to four independent displays total: built-in plus three external. It lists up to 8K 60 Hz on HDMI and 5K 60 Hz on Thunderbolt, but those per-port ceilings do not prove simultaneous dock modes or adapter results.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing on the dock works

  1. Confirm the complete dock part number and use the supply belonging to that package.
  2. Reconnect the specified host cable directly to one Thunderbolt 4 port with no extension.
  3. Connect the laptop's Slim Tip adapter directly, then test one known-good USB accessory before changing display settings.

USB works, but a display is blank

  1. Reduce to one monitor, one direct dock output and the matching monitor input.
  2. Test that monitor from the laptop's HDMI 2.1 port or a documented Thunderbolt video path with a known-good cable.
  3. If direct video works, return to the dock, update the exact dock and graphics path, then add displays one at a time.

The battery drains while docked

  1. Confirm whether the laptop shipped with the 230 W or 300 W Slim Tip adapter.
  2. Connect that adapter directly to the laptop; do not substitute the dock package's 90 W or 135 W label.
  3. Retest under the intended workload and treat any remaining drain as a laptop power or adapter issue, separate from dock video.

Still unknown: Lenovo does not establish every simultaneous display mode, HDR/refresh combination, peripheral load, local part equivalent or enterprise feature for these four rows. The GPU configuration, 230 W versus 300 W adapter, dock firmware and exact cable/monitor path remain material.
