Which dock options should you consider?
For ThinkBook 16 Gen 9 IRL machine type 21US, start with Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0135US for the straightforward USB-C desk, or choose Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B00135US when Thunderbolt peripherals or its topology are required. Both are exact-listed in Lenovo's September 2026 OCM. Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0090US is also exact-listed, but Lenovo assigns code 495 and explicitly requires the notebook's own AC adapter for adequate charging, so it is not a one-cable full-power arrangement. Connect 40AY to the notebook's 10 Gbps USB-C/DP 1.4 port or a compatible Thunderbolt port; connect 40B00135US directly to Thunderbolt 4. PSREF allows the panel plus three external displays across HDMI, USB-C and Thunderbolt, but that host-wide ceiling is not a promise that one dock supplies every combination.
Universal USB-C Dock / 40AY0135US
Lenovo exact-lists this package for machine type 21US and it is the clearest conventional USB-C desk option.
Check first: Use the supplied USB-C cable and verify negotiated host power. The 135 W package label is the dock supply rating, while notebook PD input is 45–65 W.
Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock / 40B00135US
This exact-listed package is appropriate when Thunderbolt peripherals or its documented topology are needed.
Check first: Attach directly to the notebook Thunderbolt 4 port and intersect the dock's display table with the host's panel-plus-three-external ceiling.
Universal USB-C Dock / 40AY0090US
Lenovo exact-lists it with OCM code 495 and an explicit charging qualification.
Check first: Connect the notebook's own 65 W USB-C adapter for adequate charging as Lenovo requires; do not present this as a one-cable full-power desk.
Connect displays and power
- Machine identity
- Match machine type 21US and the complete regional package number; these three are the site's full-desk shortlist, not Lenovo's complete options matrix.
- USB-C dock path
- Attach 40AY0135US or 40AY0090US using its supplied cable to the 10 Gbps USB-C port with DisplayPort 1.4/PD or a compatible Thunderbolt port.
- Thunderbolt path
- Attach 40B00135US directly to the Thunderbolt 4 port, which also carries DisplayPort 1.4 and 45–65 W PD.
- Display ceiling
- The host permits its panel plus three external displays across HDMI, USB-C and Thunderbolt. HDMI reaches 4K60 and USB-C/Thunderbolt reach 5120×2880 at 60 Hz, but the selected dock may set a lower combined mode.
- Power
- The notebook is offered with a 65 W USB-C adapter or no adapter, country dependent. Keep its own adapter connected for 40AY0090US and use it as the direct-charge reference for the other packages.
First recovery steps by symptom
Nothing on the dock works
- Confirm machine type 21US, the complete dock package and matching power supply.
- Power the dock first, then attach its supplied host cable directly to the documented USB-C or Thunderbolt port.
- Prove one USB device before reconnecting network and displays.
USB or Ethernet works but a monitor is blank
- Reduce to one FHD60 display, select its input and test another documented dock output.
- Compare the same display on notebook HDMI to isolate the monitor and cable.
- If direct video works, update exact ThinkBook graphics/Thunderbolt components and dock firmware before adding screens.
Charging is slow or absent
- Verify the complete package, its matching supply and supplied host cable.
- For 40AY0090US, connect the notebook's own 65 W USB-C adapter as Lenovo explicitly requires.
- For another package, compare direct charging and verify its actual host-delivery rating rather than using the AC-brick label.
A Thunderbolt peripheral is missing
- Confirm 40B00135US is attached directly to the notebook's Thunderbolt 4 port.
- Remove intermediate adapters and approve the device if managed security requests it.
- Update exact ThinkBook Thunderbolt components and dock firmware, then retest one peripheral.
PXE, wake or MAC passthrough fails
- Confirm 21US and the exact OCM-listed regional package.
- Enable the corresponding BIOS/network feature and test one Ethernet cable.
- Update host and dock firmware; OCM support does not prove the local switch, image or deployment policy.
Still unknown: The regional SKU, whether a 65 W adapter shipped, actual negotiated dock wattage, dock-specific combined display table, monitor EDIDs, DSC behavior, mixed resolution and refresh, HDR/color depth, cable capability, BIOS/dock firmware, enterprise Thunderbolt/network policy, Linux behavior, sleep/wake stability and physical reliability remain unknown. Lenovo's host maximum and OCM package row are not a tested one-dock display result; no hardware was tested.
