ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 21UY docks: three exact packages, one power exception

Lenovo's September 2026 OCM lists two USB-C packages and one Thunderbolt package; the 90 W bundle explicitly needs the laptop charger.

Which dock options should you consider?

For Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 IRL machine type 21UY, Lenovo exact-lists three packages. Choose Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0135US for a native USB-C desk when its guide confirms suitable host delivery, or Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock 40B00135US when Thunderbolt peripherals are required. Universal USB-C Dock 40AY0090US is also exact-listed, but Lenovo's OCM explicitly says to connect the laptop's own power adapter for adequate charging. That exception matters even though PSREF lists a 65 W USB-C adapter: a package's 90 W or 135 W label is the dock AC-brick rating, not proof of the wattage delivered to the notebook. The host supports its panel plus three external displays across HDMI, USB-C and Thunderbolt 4, but the selected dock's own matrix may set a lower combined mode.

Universal USB-C Dock / 40AY0135US

Lenovo's September 2026 OCM exact-lists this 135 W-adapter package for machine type 21UY.

Check first: Connect with the supplied USB-C cable and verify actual host delivery. The 135 W package label includes dock overhead and is not itself a laptop-power claim.

Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock / 40B00135US

This exact-listed package is the appropriate choice when the desk needs Thunderbolt peripherals or its documented topology.

Check first: Use the ThinkBook's Thunderbolt 4 port. Confirm the dock display table and host delivery rather than transferring a generic Thunderbolt maximum.

Universal USB-C Dock / 40AY0090US

Lenovo exact-lists this package but assigns OCM code 495 with an explicit power qualification.

Check first: Connect the laptop's own USB-C power adapter for adequate charging, exactly as Lenovo states; do not call this a one-cable full-power desk.

Connect displays and power

Machine identity
Match machine type 21UY and the complete US package number in Lenovo's OCM; another ThinkBook generation or regional bundle is a separate check.
USB-C dock path
Attach 40AY0135US or 40AY0090US with its supplied cable to the 10 Gbps USB-C port that supports DisplayPort 1.4 and USB PD.
Thunderbolt path
Attach 40B00135US directly to the Thunderbolt 4 port, which PSREF documents with DisplayPort 1.4 and USB PD.
Display ceiling
PSREF permits the notebook panel plus three external displays using HDMI, USB-C and Thunderbolt paths. Intersect that host ceiling with the exact dock's port and resolution table.
Power
The notebook is offered with a 65 W USB-C PD adapter, country dependent. Keep that adapter connected for 40AY0090US and use it to isolate charging on either other package.

First recovery steps by symptom

The notebook reports slow charging

  1. Read the complete dock package number and confirm its matching AC adapter and supplied host cable.
  2. For 40AY0090US, connect the laptop's own USB-C adapter as Lenovo requires.
  3. For another package, compare direct charging with the original 65 W adapter and verify the dock's documented host-delivery rating.

USB or Ethernet works but a monitor is blank

  1. Reduce to one FHD60 display, select its input and reconnect both the display and host cables.
  2. Use Windows Display Detect and test a different documented dock output before raising resolution.
  3. Add displays one at a time without exceeding the intersection of the host's three-external ceiling and the dock's own table.

A Thunderbolt peripheral is missing

  1. Confirm the 40B00135US dock is connected to the Thunderbolt 4 port rather than the USB-C-only port.
  2. Approve the device if managed security requests it and remove intermediate adapters.
  3. Update the exact ThinkBook BIOS/Thunderbolt components and dock firmware, then retest one peripheral.

PXE, wake or MAC passthrough fails

  1. Verify machine type 21UY and the exact OCM-listed regional package.
  2. Enable the matching BIOS/network function and test with one Ethernet cable.
  3. Update host BIOS and dock firmware; OCM support does not prove the site's policy, switch or deployment environment.

Still unknown: The exact regional configuration, included 65 W adapter, actual 40AY0135US/40B00135US host-delivery wattage, dock firmware, exact dock display matrix, monitor EDIDs, DSC behavior, mixed resolution and refresh, HDR/color depth, managed Thunderbolt policy, PXE infrastructure, sleep/wake behavior and physical field reliability remain unknown. Lenovo's PSREF and OCM describe manufacturer limits, not a tested desk.
