Which dock options should you consider?
Use a dock Dell lists for the MC16255 and size it for the laptop's actual power configuration. WD25Z/SD25, WD25TB4, WD25TB5, WD22TB4, WD19S with the 180 W supply, WD19TB/TBS and WD19DC/DCS in single-cable mode are documented candidates. Do not choose WD25, WD19S with the 130 W supply, UD22 or HD22Q for a one-cable MC16255 setup; Dell marks those combinations unsupported because of power.
WD25Z / SD25, WD25TB4 or WD25TB5
Dell's matrix lists these current high-power choices for the exact MC16255 row.
Check first: Identify whether the laptop is the 100 W integrated-graphics configuration or a 130 W configuration, and use the dock's specified AC adapter.
WD22TB4, WD19S 180 W or WD19TB / WD19TBS
These are documented older/current alternatives when already owned or available.
Check first: The 180 W supply is part of the WD19S answer. A WD19S 130 W setup is not the same configuration and is marked unsupported for this laptop.
WD19DC / WD19DCS
Dell lists the family as a supported option for this model.
Check first: Use the single-cable connection Dell specifies for the MC16255; do not assume the dual connector should be attached.
Connect displays and power
- Computer cable
- Connect the dock's specified USB-C/Thunderbolt host cable directly to either documented Thunderbolt 4 port. Dell's display guide recommends connecting the monitor to the dock before attaching the dock to the computer.
- Display cables
- Use direct dock HDMI or DisplayPort cables where available. Dell warns that HDMI-to-DisplayPort dongles with WD22TB4, SD25TB4 and WD25TB4 can reduce an intended 4K60 path to 4K30.
- Power
- Compare the exact system configuration with Dell's 100 W integrated-graphics or 130 W adapter requirement. The dock's supply wattage and power delivered to the laptop are different figures.
- Display ceiling
- Dell documents up to three external displays with the internal panel active or four with it off across the listed graphics options. Dell's examples can use dock outputs plus direct laptop HDMI/USB-C; do not read this as four screens from any single dock.
First recovery steps by symptom
Nothing on the dock works
- Verify the dock's correct AC adapter and status indicator.
- Reconnect the dock's specified host cable directly to one MC16255 Thunderbolt 4 port, without an extension or intermediary hub.
- Try the second Thunderbolt 4 port and one known-good USB accessory before changing display settings.
A 4K display is limited to 30 Hz
- Remove HDMI-to-DisplayPort or DisplayPort-to-HDMI dongles from the path.
- Connect the monitor directly to a matching dock HDMI or DisplayPort output with a known-good cable.
- Retest one display at 4K60, then add the remaining displays one at a time.
Charging is slow or the battery drains under load
- Check whether the exact MC16255 configuration came with Dell's 100 W or 130 W adapter.
- Confirm the dock variant, its AC supply and its delivered host power against that requirement.
- Use the laptop's original supported charger if the dock cannot provide the documented requirement.
Still unknown: The documents do not establish every four-display combination through one dock, every high-refresh/HDR mode, or sustained charging under an exact CPU/GPU workload. Configuration, dock revision, monitor modes and cables remain part of the check.
