Applies to: Dock-connected displays, with Windows 11 driver/app checks. The diagnostic sequence is proposed, not a guaranteed fix for every device.
Describe what disappears
| Symptom | Useful first check |
|---|---|
| Monitor shows its “no signal” message | Physical connection, selected input and supported mode. |
| App content flickers but the input stays active | Application or graphics-driver behavior. |
| USB devices also reconnect at the same moment | The shared dock/host connection or power path. |
| Only one screen fails after increasing its mode | That output path and its bandwidth requirements. |
If the whole desktop flickers in Windows, Microsoft uses Task Manager behavior to help distinguish driver from app problems. That test is not a diagnosis of every intermittent black screen. Microsoft: screen flickering in Windows
Establish a direct baseline
Keep the same monitor, selected input and target mode while testing a supported direct laptop connection. If it also fails directly, the dock is no longer the only suspect. Microsoft recommends checking cables and testing the monitor on another system to isolate the failure. Microsoft: external monitor connection troubleshooting
Do not change the dock, cable, driver and refresh rate together. You may obtain a picture without learning which change mattered, making the next recurrence harder to solve.
Reintroduce the dock in stages
- Stop file transfers and save work before reconnecting the dock.
- Test one display alone through the powered dock.
- Try a lower supported refresh rate while keeping resolution constant, then record the result.
- Return to the previous setting before substituting a known-good cable, where possible.
- Add the second screen and required peripherals individually.
- For Windows desktop flicker, follow Microsoft’s driver/app branch using an approved update process.
What to report if it continues
Record whether the monitor’s own menu stays visible, whether its input message appears, whether USB devices reconnect and whether the failure follows sleep or a particular application. Include the selected resolution and refresh rate.
A stable lower mode is useful evidence of a mode-dependent problem, but it does not prove that the original cable is faulty. The complete host, dock, adapter and monitor path still determines which modes should work.
