Start with the native limit

Apple specifies one external screen, up to 6K at 60 Hz, over the Thunderbolt/USB4 connection. Closing the lid does not create a second native display output. Apple: MacBook Air M1 specifications

A single screen can use a direct cable

  1. Identify the monitor’s video input and mode.
  2. Use a compatible USB-C video cable or adapter from the Mac.
  3. Power the monitor and select the wired input.
  4. Check the display settings and a normal work session.

A second screen changes the question

If two independent external desktops are necessary, compare a documented software-display arrangement and its installation requirements. Keep workplace permission, supported macOS, app behavior and protected-video restrictions in the decision. Read the DisplayLink permission guide.

Avoid buying for socket count

An HDMI splitter typically answers a mirroring need, not two independent desktops. Before replacing equipment, write whether you need another workspace, the same image elsewhere, or a larger single screen. Those are different requirements.
