Identify the type code, not just the brand

Read “40AS” on the product label and compare it with Lenovo’s overview. Lenovo sells docks with similar names but different display architectures. Instructions for a Hybrid or Thunderbolt model may not apply. Lenovo: USB-C Dock Gen 2 overview

Record the dock’s power adapter and host cable as separate items. A secondhand listing can contain the correct dock body with a different cable or an incomplete power supply. Resolve those details before testing.

The Mac limitation that changes the decision

Lenovo’s industry-standard compatibility reference lists a single extended external display for this Mac configuration and clone mode for additional monitors. That distinction matters even if every attached monitor shows a picture. Lenovo: industry-standard dock compatibility

Installing DisplayLink Manager does not establish that 40AS contains DisplayLink hardware. Check the dock architecture before following software-dock instructions.

Use what works while diagnosing

  1. Connect a single display and confirm an extended desktop alongside the laptop screen.
  2. Test the other display alone on a known-good cable and input.
  3. Reconnect both and inspect the display arrangement rather than counting illuminated panels.
  4. If you require two independent external displays, check the exact Mac chip and a supported direct or Thunderbolt route.
  5. On a work laptop, establish whether a software-display alternative would be permitted before buying one.

For a Windows desk or a shared desk

The Mac limitation should not be converted into a claim that the dock cannot support multiple Windows displays. Windows arrangements require their own host and mode checks against Lenovo’s table. Keep a separate configuration record for each computer.

If the dock already works for one laptop, consider whether a direct cable for the other is the smallest practical change. A replacement makes sense when it resolves an actual shared-desk requirement without introducing an unacceptable software or charging constraint.
