Vostro 5640 docks: WD25 is current; older USB-C options are narrower

Dell's exact-model matrix separates supported USB-C docks from several look-alike dock families that are not supported for this model.

Which dock options should you consider?

For a current Dell choice, start with Dell Pro Dock WD25: Dell's March 2026 matrix marks it supported for Vostro 5640 and marks WD25Z/SD25, WD25TB4/SD25TB4 and WD25TB5/SD25TB5 unsupported. If buying from the previous generation, the same exact-model record supports the 130 W WD19S package, Dell Universal Dock UD22 and Dell Dual Charge Dock HD22Q; it does not support WD22TB4, the 180 W WD19S package, WD19TB/TBS or WD19DC/DCS. These are model-and-package results, not conclusions from the shape of the USB-C socket.

Dell Pro Dock WD25

Dell marks this current USB-C dock supported for the exact Vostro 5640 row.

Check first: Match the label to WD25. WD25Z/SD25, WD25TB4/SD25TB4 and WD25TB5/SD25TB5 are separate families and are marked unsupported.

Dell WD19S 130 W

Dell's previous-generation table supports the 130 W package for this model.

Check first: Do not substitute the 180 W WD19S package: Dell marks that package unsupported for Vostro 5640.

Dell UD22 or HD22Q

Both universal USB-C options are supported in Dell's previous-generation exact-model table.

Check first: Treat their output layout and charging behavior as dock-specific; support does not establish every monitor mode or accessory combination.

Connect displays and power

Computer cable
Use the selected dock's supplied USB-C host cable directly between its host port and the notebook's documented USB-C port. Do not use a charge-only cable or an extension.
Display cables
Connect each display to an output documented for that exact dock, select the matching monitor input, and prove one display before adding the second.
Power
Power the dock with the supply sold for that exact package. Confirm Windows reports charging; if it does not, use the notebook's own Dell adapter while isolating display and USB behavior.
Do not substitute
WD25Z/SD25, WD25TB4/SD25TB4, WD25TB5/SD25TB5, WD22TB4, WD19S 180 W, WD19TB/TBS and WD19DC/DCS are marked unsupported in the applicable Dell rows.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing on the dock works

  1. Confirm the exact dock label and its original AC supply.
  2. Reconnect the supplied host cable directly, with no adapter or extension.
  3. Try one known-good USB accessory, then update only Dell-listed BIOS and dock firmware before retesting.

USB works but a display is blank

  1. Test that monitor directly or alone with its current cable and selected input.
  2. Move it to a documented video output on the dock and start at a moderate mode.
  3. Add the second display only after the first is stable; do not treat spare USB-C sockets as video outputs without documentation.

The dock works but the battery does not charge

  1. Check Windows charging status rather than assuming power from working USB devices.
  2. Verify the dock power-supply package and the host cable seating.
  3. Connect the notebook's Dell adapter; if charging returns, keep it attached and investigate the dock power path separately.

Still unknown: Dell's compatibility matrices do not publish a tested resolution-and-refresh table for every Vostro 5640 configuration, dock firmware, adapter and monitor combination. The exact CPU/GPU configuration, dock revision, cable capability, charging wattage delivered to this notebook and behavior after sleep remain unverified here.

German source labels are translated as supported or not supported. A negative mark remains negative even when a footnote describes a power limitation. Missing entries are shown separately.

Before choosing a dock

  1. Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
  2. Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
  3. Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
  4. Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
