Which dock options should you consider?
For Dell Precision 3591, choose a current WD25TB4 or WD25TB5 package when you need a supported current Thunderbolt desk, or WD25Z when that supported current family matches the required output layout. Dell's 12 March 2026 exact-model matrix marks all three supported but marks base WD25 No*, so the base model must not be substituted. For existing fleets, WD22TB4, WD19/S with the 180 W supply, WD19TB/TBS and WD19DC/DCS are supported; WD19/S 130 W, UD22 and HD22Q remain negative. WD19DC/DCS carries footnote 1, so connect only one of its two host cables. Dell documents 100 W and 130 W USB-C adapters for the notebook and calls 130 W optimal. For one-cable intent, verify before purchase that the exact supported dock package and supplied cable meet the notebook's 130 W requirement; otherwise keep the 130 W laptop adapter attached. Dell's host guide describes up to four 4K displays or one 8K display, but the actual result depends on installed graphics, dock, ports, cables and modes and is not a promise for every supported dock.
WD25TB4 or WD25TB5
Dell's current Precision 3591 row marks both Thunderbolt families supported, making them the direct current choices when their downstream topology is needed.
Check first: For one-cable use, confirm the complete package's documented host power reaches the notebook's optimal 130 W requirement. Match the supplied host cable and the exact dock display table.
WD25Z
Dell also marks WD25Z supported for this exact model, providing a current documented alternative when its connector and display layout fits the desk.
Check first: Do not shorten the name to WD25: base WD25 is No* in the same exact row. Verify host power, cable and display modes for the complete WD25Z package.
WD22TB4, WD19/S 180 W, WD19TB/TBS or WD19DC/DCS reuse
Dell's previous-family table supports these exact reuse routes for Precision 3591.
Check first: Use only one WD19DC/DCS host cable. WD19/S with 130 W, UD22 and HD22Q remain negative, and separate notebook power does not reverse those cells.
Connect displays and power
- Exact choice
- Match Precision 3591 and the complete dock family. Base WD25, WD19/S 130 W, UD22 and HD22Q remain negative even though related models or connectors may look similar.
- Host cable
- Power the selected dock first and connect its supplied host cable directly through the documented left-side Thunderbolt 4 path; remove extensions and intermediate hubs for the first test.
- WD19DC/DCS exception
- Attach only one of the two WD19DC/DCS host cables. Dell's footnote 1 supports that single-cable arrangement, not the dual-cable workstation mode.
- First display
- Start with one known-good display and one direct cable from a documented dock output, select the monitor input and prove an ordinary mode before adding displays.
- Additional displays
- Add displays one at a time inside the exact dock and graphics tables. The host guide's four-4K or one-8K ceiling does not guarantee a particular dock, cable, refresh or mixed-monitor combination.
- Power
- Dell documents 100 W and 130 W USB-C adapters and identifies 130 W as optimal. Confirm exact dock-to-host delivery; if it is lower or unknown, attach the 130 W laptop adapter rather than presenting the desk as one-cable.
- Recovery order
- For a no-display case, connect the monitors to the powered dock before attaching the host, then use the documented left-side Thunderbolt 4 path and add peripherals only after one screen works.
First recovery steps by symptom
Nothing on the dock works
- Confirm the exact supported dock family, matching supply and supplied host cable; reject base WD25 and the negative reuse groups.
- Power the dock before the notebook, then reseat its supplied host cable directly in the documented left-side Thunderbolt 4 port.
- Remove displays and peripherals, prove one USB device, then rebuild the desk one connection at a time.
USB works but the display is blank
- Connect one known-good monitor and direct cable to the powered dock before attaching the notebook.
- Use the documented left-side Thunderbolt 4 path, select the monitor input and reduce the mode to FHD60.
- If a direct notebook display path works, update Precision graphics/Thunderbolt components and exact dock firmware before adding screens.
Charging is slow or a power warning appears
- Confirm the exact dock package, matching supply and supplied host cable without an extension.
- Check whether the dock arrangement documents the notebook's optimal 130 W requirement rather than assuming it from the adapter label.
- Compare with the documented 130 W laptop adapter; direct success isolates the dock power path and may mean the desk cannot remain one-cable.
WD19DC/DCS behaves unpredictably
- Disconnect both host leads and dock power.
- Restore dock AC, then connect only one WD19DC/DCS host cable to the notebook.
- Update dock firmware and retest one USB device plus one display before rebuilding the full desk.
One display works but another does not
- Return the connected displays to FHD60 and remove adapters or extension cables.
- Add the next display on another documented dock output only after the first is stable.
- Check the installed graphics option, exact dock table and cables instead of treating the host's maximum as a guaranteed combined mode.
Still unknown: The installed processor and graphics option, exact dock revision and power package, dock-to-host wattage, supplied-cable identity, dock firmware, simultaneous-output table, DSC availability, monitor EDIDs, mixed resolution and refresh, HDR/color depth, cable or adapter capability, BIOS policy, operating-system and driver state, sleep/wake stability, sustained load and physical reliability remain unknown. Dell's matrix and host manuals are manufacturer documentation, not Connect Your Dock tests; the four-4K or one-8K host ceiling does not establish a particular docked monitor set.
