Dell Latitude 7400 docks: WD22TB4 and WD19 connection exceptions

This 2019-generation Latitude has one Thunderbolt-capable USB-C port and shipped with 65 W or 90 W adapters. Dell's current compatibility guide keeps several WD19/WD22 choices documented, with two connection exceptions.

Which dock options should you consider?

Use WD22TB4, WD19/WD19S, WD19TB/TBS or WD19DC/DCS from Dell's exact Latitude 7400 row. WD22TB4 works, but on this older Thunderbolt host only one port on the dock's module retains Thunderbolt operation; the other is USB/DisplayPort only. WD19DC/DCS must use one host cable, not its normal dual-cable workstation arrangement. Dell marks UD22 and HD22Q unsupported, and the reviewed matrix does not establish a current WD25 pairing for this older model.

WD22TB4

Dell lists it for Latitude 7400, making it the documented Thunderbolt 4 dock reuse/current-module option.

Check first: Only one WD22 module port remains Thunderbolt on this older host; the other is limited to USB and DisplayPort. Test any Thunderbolt peripheral on the correct port.

WD19 / WD19S or WD19TB / WD19TBS

Dell lists both WD19S supply configurations and the WD19 Thunderbolt family for this exact model.

Check first: Match the dock's delivered host power to the laptop's original 65 W or 90 W adapter and use the specified host cable and AC supply.

WD19DC / WD19DCS

Dell lists this workstation-dock family as a supported reuse option for Latitude 7400.

Check first: Connect only one host cable. Dell warns that attaching both on this model can cause unwanted behavior; this is not full dual-cable mode.

Connect displays and power

Computer cable
Connect the dock directly to the laptop's single USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2 Thunderbolt port. Do not use either USB-A port as the host connection.
Display cables
Start with one direct cable from a dock video output. The laptop's HDMI 1.4a output provides a separate direct route for isolating a monitor/cable problem.
Power
Latitude 7400 documentation lists 65 W and 90 W barrel or USB-C adapters. Compare the original adapter with the dock's delivered host power; both WD19S variants are listed, but the exact supply still matters.
Legacy limits
On WD22TB4, place a true Thunderbolt peripheral on the one module port that retains Thunderbolt operation. Treat the second module port as USB/DisplayPort on this host.

First recovery steps by symptom

Nothing on the dock works

  1. Verify the dock's exact AC supply and powered status indicator.
  2. Reconnect its specified host cable directly to the Latitude 7400 Thunderbolt USB-C port, without an extension.
  3. If using WD19DC/DCS, disconnect the second host plug and retest with only one cable as Dell specifies.

USB works, but a display does not

  1. Reduce to one monitor and one direct dock video cable, then select the matching monitor input.
  2. Test the same monitor and cable from the laptop's direct HDMI 1.4a output when possible.
  3. If direct HDMI works, return to the dock route, update Dell graphics/dock firmware for Latitude 7400, and add other displays only after the first works.

A WD22TB4 Thunderbolt peripheral is missing

  1. Move the peripheral to the other port on the WD22 Thunderbolt module.
  2. Keep the dock's host cable connected to the laptop's Thunderbolt USB-C port.
  3. Test the peripheral directly on the laptop or with its own known-good cable before blaming the dock module.

Still unknown: The reviewed documents do not establish every combined display resolution/refresh mode or a current WD25 pairing for Latitude 7400. Dock revision, BIOS, cable, monitor and the laptop's exact 65 W/90 W configuration remain material.

German source labels are translated as supported or not supported. A negative mark remains negative even when a footnote describes a power limitation. Missing entries are shown separately.

Before choosing a dock

  1. Match the entire device name, including processor, generation and chassis variant.
  2. Record your screen models, inputs and intended resolutions and refresh rates.
  3. Confirm those screens work together through the proposed dock outputs.
  4. Check the supplied power adapter, laptop charging requirement and software permission.
