Applies to: Apple silicon Mac laptops using Apple’s accessory-approval feature. Menu wording can vary by macOS version; administrators may manage it.
Why the power light is not the answer
Apple distinguishes accessory data access from charging. Declining a new accessory can leave power available while preventing recognition and data access. Unlock the Mac before expecting to approve the prompt. Apple: approving USB and Thunderbolt accessories
This gives a plausible explanation for a dock that charges while USB devices remain unavailable. It does not prove that every missing monitor is caused by the prompt: native display limits, output wiring and cables still require their own checks.
Approve the known accessory deliberately
- Open and unlock the laptop using its own keyboard or trackpad if the dock inputs are unavailable.
- Confirm that the connected dock or accessory is the one you intend to use.
- Reconnect it if needed to obtain the approval prompt, then allow that known device.
- Check whether the keyboard, storage or other affected device is now recognized.
- Test video separately using the exact laptop and dock connection guide.
Where the setting lives
Apple places accessory controls under System Settings → Privacy & Security, with an Accessories section in its current instructions. Managed computers may have this controlled by an administrator. Ask IT if the choice is unavailable or enforced.
There is no need to recommend “always allow everything” as a routine troubleshooting step. Approving the known device and identifying the actual failure preserves a more specific result. Do not change organizational policy to avoid asking for the required support.
Before closing the lid
Establish the external display and input devices while you can still operate the laptop. Then follow the host-specific closed-lid requirements. A display-count limitation on an M3 Air remains a separate issue from accessory approval.
If the dock is approved and USB devices work but video remains absent, move to the missing-video diagnostic. If the affected screen uses DisplayLink, its software and screen-recording permission are another separate requirement; approving a USB accessory does not replace them.
